  LDCad feature requests
Posted by: Orion Pobursky - 2019-04-04, 18:39 - Forum: LDraw Editors and Viewers - Replies (15)

A couple of items that would help me out:
- If a pbg file references a ~Moved to part, show the new part, not the old.
- The ability to paste a rotation matrix string (or the whole line)

How to fold multi-part submodel correctly
Posted by: Lutz Gehlen - 2019-04-03, 19:42 - Forum: LDraw Editors and Viewers - Replies (3)

Hello all,

I have a submodel with several degrees of freedom, e.g. something like this:

It can be rotated around the end pins and around the central beam and folded at the two joints. My problem now is to find the correct configuration to fit the final pin into a given hole. For me as a total beginner in digital modelling it is quite intriguing that this task would be trivial in reality, but is a considerable challenge digitally.

However, I cannot be the first one facing such a problem. So I wonder how you guys address it. Trial and error? Some powerful tool? Currently, I am writing a lot of my ldraw files by hand, but for trial and visualization I use LeoCAD. Having said that, I am certainly interested as well if some other editor is helpful here. (If it runs under Linux, this would be a great plus, but not essential.)

Thanks for your help,
Lutz

Elimination of Physical_Colour parts from the library
Posted by: Willy Tschager - 2019-04-03, 6:25 - Forum: LDraw.org Announcements - Replies (17)

Hi,

the LDraw SteerCo has unanimously decided to eliminate the current Physical_Colour parts from the official LDraw Parts Library via fasttrack. Physical_Colour parts are parts with hard coded colours, an unique part number and an underscore in front of the description. LEGO calls these "Element numbers". Following a few part numbers from the current library for comparison:

4277932.dat
4277933.dat
300321.dat
4116604.dat
...

But before they get "obsolated" by the Library Admin, we seek feedback and input from the community. Have your word.

Pictures of Steam Boat Willie Patterned Parts
Posted by: Max Martin Richter - 2019-04-02, 20:29 - Forum: Parts Authoring - Replies (2)

Hi @ all,
While I was in the local LEGO Store to check some Patterns and Stickers of 10265, I found a display model of Steam Boat Willie. I used this opportunity to do some photos of the patterned parts.
I uploaded all to my bricksafe account so that everybody who wants to do a pattern can use these pictures as (additional) reference.

Short side note for the legs: It is a double mold: pearl gray and black with silver pattern.

/Max

  2019/2020 LDraw.org Steering Committee announced
Posted by: Max Martin Richter - 2019-04-02, 19:58 - Forum: LDraw.org Announcements - No Replies

Since we had only 5 confirmed nominees, no election was necessary.

Therefore, the 2019/2020 LDraw.org Steering Committee [1] is:

Johann Eisner
Orion Pobursky
Max Martin Richter
Willy Tschager
Jaco van der Molen

[1] Try not to confuse the LDraw.org Steering Committee (SteerCo) with the LDraw.org Standards Board (LSB). The Steering Committee sets the course for the LDraw Organization while the Standards Board deals with the LDraw File Format.

Congratulations to the reconfirmed and new members!

Sorry for the delay of announcing the new SteerCo.

Max Martin Richter

  Math spreadsheet
Posted by: Orion Pobursky - 2019-03-29, 17:16 - Forum: Parts Author Tools - No Replies

A while back I released a spreadsheet to do some math for things that might crop up during model and part editing. I recently unearthed it and converted it to a Google Sheet. While there are online calculators out there for most of this stuff, I like having one stop shoppoing. Note that this a is work is progress so there may be errors and other things wrong. Hope someone finds this useful.
