  LDraw server problems 20 July 2014

Due to a server migration, the ldraw.org website is currently unavailable and the Parts Tracker is not functioning. I am in touch with Dan Boger who kindly provides us with this webspace on the peeron servers and we are working to resolve the problem.

  Calling Mac developers: LDMakeList on Mac

Hi Mac Devs,

In light of this post I was wondering if any of you could compile or package (I'm not sure how it all works, but I gather it's *nix based) LDMakeList for OSX. Maybe someone has done this and I've forgotten Smile

The source code is very standard C++ and shouldn't cause any major pains. Although there might need to be some changes made to the processing of directories. You might also want to make sure it deals with old Mac-style newlines.

If anyone thinks they can help, please contact me about getting the latest source code and any other information.

  Help - Need parts.lst for Mac

Hi all,

having real troubles with lpub for my mac... he can't find the parts.lst. And if I download your full package here, there is unfortnately no parts.lst included... only a .exe file I can't open with Mac.

Can anyone provide me with the latest parts.lst please as direct download? I can't find it on your side, and everything links to the zip files that just contain this strange .exe instead of .lst files Sad

  A 3/4-stud or not?

Hi,

On many window and door frames there is a rather odd stud.

   
We usually make them without using a stud primitive, or need to make a very uniqe, specially designed stud.

I had to make eight files for 4209, in normal and low resolution. They all have to be different since there is a logo on top of each stud.

   
Due to the fact that we still need to fool MLCad, and have a lo-res version, (including a Moved to-primitive), to every new stud, the number of uniqe files have to be twelve for every new part with a small hole in the stud. A uniqe set of of primitives that hardly will be reused.

I would like to introduce a 3/4-stud instead.

   
A single set of primitives that could be reused in many of the parts above.
They will help connection seeking software and will place the logo in a correct position.
The small hole is to be added as a single, reusable, non-rotationally sensitive subfile (or primitive).

I've tried this set-up in LDView and MLCad. It works fine.
How will it work in LDCad, SR3D Builder or Bricksmith? Or in any other software with stud substitution ability?

How should I do with studs that have a hole that isn't fully placed in one of the quarters, but in between?

Do all the frames have a logo on top of the stud with a small hole?
I don't have all the frames, but I know that 4209 do have small holes and a logo, and that the two parts with square holes (60594 and 60598) doesn't.

If we ignore the logo, it is possible to use a single file and rotate the gap to were it needs to be.

So, three questions.
Should we continue in making new studs for each part?
Or should we replace them with this 3/4-stud?
Or could we ignore the logo, and simplify it to a single stud?

  Matrix "split"

On the topic of matrix calculations, I believe it should be possible to split any given transformation matrix into two composing matrices where one would represent the rotation and the other would represent the scale. Essentially a matrix version of a "vector = unit_vector * scalar" equation, like a "matrix = rotation_matrix * scale_matrix" where rotation_matrix would contain the rotation of the matrix with no scaling and scale_matrix would be otherwise an identity matrix but with the scaling of the main matrix. Is this kind of split possible? If so, how to do it?

  LDView POV output colors

The default colors of LDView's POV-Ray output are too light and washed out looking when rendered using POV-Ray 3.7 as opposed to POV-Ray 3.6. This is due to the way POV-Ray 3.7 handles gamma output differently than before. So I created the attached hotfix for lg_color.inc that repairs this issue. This fix was suggested to me at the POV-Ray newsgroup. It may not be perfect, but as you can see in the attached images the "saturated" version looks much closer to reality than the "unsaturated" version.

Update: changing each color statement to use the srgb keyword instead of rgb should do the trick just as well.
