[LDPartEditor] 0.8.42 Beta Released (Bug fix / open *.dat with LDPartEditor.exe)
Posted by: Nils Schmidt - 2018-01-23, 20:36 - Forum: Parts Author Tools - Replies (11)

Hi,

this release is mainly a critical bug fix, but it includes one handy feature: You can now open *.dat files from the Windows file explorer.

  1. Select a *.dat file
  2. Open the context menu
  3. Select "Open with"
  4. Select "Choose another app"
  5. Browse for LDPartEditor.exe

As always, you can download LDPE from this page:
http://nilsschmidt1337.github.io/ldparteditor/

Changelog:
(1 new feature and 3 bug fixes)

With this release you will be able to...
  • ...open *.dat files with LDPartEditor from the Windows file explorer ("Open with..." and select LDPartEditor.exe).

The following critical issues were fixed:
  1. Fixed a rare but critical undo/redo bug.
  2. Fixed a synchronization bug between the text and 3D editor.
  3. Fixed a bug which could freeze the text editor.

What will the next release 0.8.43 deliver? An improved version of Lines2Pattern, bug fixes.

The program was tested intensively with "real world" files.
However, it is still a beta version and something can go wrong in about 140.000 lines of code.

Make sure that you choose the right architecture for your OS and Java Virtual Machine (JVM) (64bit or 32bit).
A short guide how to check if a 64bit JVM is installed on your system is located at the bottom of this message.

  1. Download the zip-Archive
  2. Extract the archive content to the location of your choice
  3. On windows, double-click "LDPartEditor.exe" to start LDPE.
  4. On linux/mac, you have to excecute the shell script "run.sh" to start LDPE.
Alternatively, you can download a setup file to install LDPE on Windows.
When you install/extract LDPE on Windows you will find your LDPE configuration files under
{drive}\Users\{user}\AppData\Roaming\LDPartEditor
It is not recommended to use the "update.bat" script when you installed LDPE via the setup file.
Manually install the new version instead.

Please note that this software is in the beta stage. Although, this version was tested, there are already known issues  for this release. There is a potential risk of data loss.

You can search for updates if you do the following steps:

  1. On windows, double-click "update.bat" to search for updates.
  2. On linux/mac, you have to excecute the shell script "update.sh".

It is not recommended to use the "update.bat" script when you installed LDPE via the setup file.
Manually install the new version instead.

I listen carefully to your requests and possible complaints. Please leave me a message, with your thoughts and wishes to further improve the software.

LDPE is a 3D CAD application: The overall system requirements are higher. While I recommend to use a powerful 64-bit multicore system, it could be possible, to run LDPE on older machines as well.

System Requirements:

Minimum System Requirements:
  • 64-bit Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.8
  • OpenGL 2.1 compatible Graphics Card
  • Operating System (64-bit): Windows [7 or newer], Linux [e.g. Ubuntu Linux >=14.4], Mac OS X [>=10.6]
  • CPU: Multicore-Processor e.g. Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon II (>2.0Ghz)
  • RAM: 4GB
  • Video-Memory: 1 GB
  • Free Disk Space: 100 MB
Recommended Requirements:
  • Operating System (64bit): Windows 7,8,10, Linux [e.g. Ubuntu Linux >=14.4], Mac OS X [>=10.6]
  • OpenGL 3.3 compatible Graphics Card
  • CPU: Multicore-Processor with 4 cores (or more)
  • RAM: >4 GB
  • Video-Memory: >1 GB
  • Free Disk Space: 512 MB
  • For a faster start, LDPartEditor and the LDraw™ library should be installed on an SSD.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to check your JVM version (32- or 64-bit):
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can try on the command line:

Code:
java -d64 version

If it's not a 64-bit version, you'll get a message that looks like:
This Java instance does not support a 64-bit JVM. Please install the desired version.

Question MPD files from MOCpages and Lego Digital Designer
Posted by: Kai Grieb - 2018-01-23, 13:47 - Forum: Help - Replies (1)

Does anyone know how to open MPD files in Lego Digital Designer? I'm trying to make instructions for myself about the reverse-engineered Lego Universe pets, which you can find on MOCpages under "LEGO Universe Pets" by "Brent S." I'd post a link, but the bots on the wiki think it's spam. Let me try here:

Pet Folder

[/url][url=http://www.moc-pages.com/moc.php/273300]Paradox Alien (sample MPD at download link by bottom of page)

Everything's an MPD, though, and LDD can't open it.

(Please note I am UTTERLY new to the complexity of Digital Lego, and I’m just trying to make physical Lego Universe pets because,

1: I collect and build physical Lego, casually, though,
2: I was unable to play Lego Universe before it went offline,
3: I was unable to enter for the current bout of the Darkflame Universe revival project,
4: I’ve been looking for nice microbuilds to pass the time and display with my Lego animals, and thought the Lego Universe pets were cool and cute enough to be perfect.

I hope someone can help me. Thanks for reading.

Tool to determine which files have not been used
Posted by: Michael Horvath - 2018-01-20, 5:18 - Forum: LDraw Editors and Viewers - Replies (1)

I have a directory full of models. Most of them are used in a larger scene, but not all. Is there a way to figure out which models are *not* used in the larger scene? Thanks.

[edit]

Never mind. I noticed that MPDCenter creates such a list when it creates an MPD file.

  MLCad.ini 2017-01 update now available
Posted by: Willy Tschager - 2018-01-19, 17:02 - Forum: LDraw.org Announcements - No Replies

Hi folks,

I just updated the MLCad.ini file accordingly to the latest LDraw.org parts update 2017-01. The .ini file defines (among other things) the parts available in MLCad's, LEOCad's and Bricksmith's minifigure generator.

Download the file from my website: http://www.holly-wood.it/mlcad/mlcad_ini-en.html

Bye, w.

  LPub3D not saving rendering preferences
Posted by: Warren Elsmore - 2018-01-18, 21:49 - Forum: LDraw Editors and Viewers - Replies (5)

Hi,

First up - a big thankyou for the continued development of LPub3D. It's a big step up from LPub. However, I've two problems which I think is related and wondered if anyone could help?

Problem 2 - custom parts don't render properly or appear in the BOM. I've seen the threads about this, and I think it might be related to...

Problem 1 - I'm asked to give the paths to the renderers every time I open LPub3D (and, co-incidentally this dialog pops up behind the splash screen!) So, I'm not sure if the preferences are properly saving. Logo path, Trademark etc etc - all do save, but the renderers don't

So, I'm wondering if the preferences not saving are also affecting the path to the unofficial parts too? This is on High Sierra on a current Macbook Pro, but I've just upgraded and it was the same on Sierra on my previous Macbook air too. So I don't think it's install related. Looking in the 'Application Support' directory, I can't see a plist - so does anyone know where the preferences should be saved?

Thanks!

  Fake LEGO: Red Slope, Curved
Posted by: Jaco van der Molen - 2018-01-18, 20:22 - Forum: Off-Topic - Replies (4)

Hi all,

Northing to do with LDraw, but wanted to ask here.
I ordered some bricks on Bricklink. Ten of these to be exact (among other parts)
[Image: 85970.jpg] Red Slope, Curved

I think that one of 10 of these parts is fake LEGO.
It has no LEGO logo on the studs and no partnumber, copyright note and stuff in tiny letters on the inside. The inner detail is different too.
The material feels like cheap hard plastic, not like LEGO at all.
Dropping it on a smooth table even sounds different too.
Could this be a non LEGO part? It does fit though and clutch power is good, so no problem there. Color is good too.

See these photo's.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/RpE2vFqxWvZjqC1E2
What do you think?

Photo 1: studs with LEGO logo and studs without LOGO
Photo 2: zoom in to see left part no copyright LEGO and speckled surface (looks a bit like roofbricks), right part has little text and smooth surface
Photo 3: inner details thinner
