Looking for a parts author to team up with.
#1
Hey all, so I really love Ldraw and this community and I'd like to help it out some as well as get some parts I've been looking for. Thing is, I am in a truck 24/7 and really don't have the time to learn to be a parts author, plus a bouncing mouse is hard to work with.

What I do have (well, I will soon) is a little spare cash, My idea is to buy some sets off ebay and have them mailed to a parts author for replication in Ldraw who would then mail the sets back to me. I figure this is important because a lot of the parts I'm interested in would need a 3d scan or being able to work with them directly.

Things like:

Stingray helmet
Sting ray disk decal designone
Elves Dragon and animal heads

There's sure to be a lot to work out in order to make this work so I thought I'd get started on it before I was ready to buy some sets. Should be a month or so before I can start doing this.

Because I'm opting to send a few hundred dollars worth of parts to a relative stranger, I would need the community to vouch for any parts author interested in working on this. With one exception, my preferred choice is Philippe Hurbain. As the administrator of this site and a man who has already volunteered his free time to make me, a relative stranger some parts I feel if this idea has any hope of working then he's gotta be in good standing.

That being said, I wouldn't even humor this idea except that everyone here seems to be trustworthy, the community seems like a place of people who like to help out. Anyone interested in this idea should respond so we can work something out.

I should mention that because these sets can be pretty pricey, I'm not really volunteering to buy sets on request. I just want to fill out some classic sets from my childhood and some of the new ones I think are really cool.

Thank you, anyone who takes interest in advance.

Well, there may not be a need to buy expensive sets (with expensive shipment). Parts for which you need models would be enough... And even that may not be needed. For example the stingray helmet is available in LDD, only requiring a conversion and LDraw tuning. The raw converted part is already available here: http://www.digital-bricks.de/en/file.php?part=30202
There are also a lot of animal heads available, just waiting for conversion...

Now I am no sure to be able to devote enough time to make all the parts you need. This is a hobby, and I prefer it remains so Wink

Well, that's pretty cool, also yeah, I didn't expect anyone to go making half a million parts, I wasn't exactly sure how all this could work, I just knew I didn't want to ask without being able to offer some help.

You mentioned there were animal heads but are there the head pieces that come with the Elves figures to make their dragons and what not?

I was having a hard time finding them but I'm no the best at finding this stuff. I only know to look up the part name (number) and search for it in the Parts Tracker and sometimes to shorten it if the number likely references a specific color or variant.

Yes, finding the right number is not easy... Brickset https://brickset.com/ is a good source as they use LEGO numbers. But that doesn't always work for parts that exist only in patterned version (LEGO uses a completely different number for eaxh pattern).
For the dragons:
Head - http://www.digital-bricks.de/en/file.php?part=24196
Jaw - http://www.digital-bricks.de/en/file.php?part=24199

It's not just the part number with an extension?

Also thank you for your help.

It would be too simple for LEGO Wink
Each patterned part has its own design number (5 digit number, corresponding to mold number - shape if you prefer - for unpatterned parts). In addition it has a 7 digit item number, meaning shape+specific plastic color. See for example the gazillon of references for tile 1x2 https://brickset.com/parts/page-4?query=...Tile%201X2
