[LDPatternCreator] Release 1.7.1 (better rotation / usability / triangulation)

[LDPatternCreator] Release 1.7.1 (better rotation / usability / triangulation)
#1
Hi,

today, I decided to finish more features for LDPatternCreator. Here is the result!

Download and install the latest LDPatternCreator release directly from sourceforge.net.

Change log:

New features:
  • Rotation will be applied around the selected vertex which is the nearest to the cursor (except for primitives, subfiles and groups)
  • A click on "Select" cancels "Add vertex" / "Add triangle" ...
  • "Remove isolated vertices" is always visible and enabled on the toolbar
  • "Fast triangulation II" is renamed to "Create new vertices during triangle creation"
  • "Fast triangulation" is now always active by default (can be temporarily deactivated by pressing CTRL or cancelled with RMB)

Fixed bugs:
  • Fast triangulation suggested the wrong edge on longer triangles
  • A rare error occured during triangle creation

As always, I included a short readme.htm in the installation directory.

Cheers & Leg Godt

Thank God I have not downloaded the 1.7.0 version yet.
The rotation around a vertex I would have needed more often.
I'm looking forward to try it.
If nothing goes right, go left.

Now that was a real sprint!

The rotation around vertices is great! Looking forward to test it out, I was missing this dearly and always tried to construct symmetrical triangles to rotate something around a defined center :-)

Interesting! I would have created curves first to get the same distance (and to better control the shape of the curve) between the vertices and then filled with triangles.

Me too. ;-) And I had removed the vertex inside at the stars centre. ;-)

But it's impressive how fast this was done. I'm sure, that I would need more time to do that pattern.

All in all it's great to have such a short example video. Maybe this can be used for the wiki?

Since curvature is not constant, there is no real benefit to keep the same distance.
Quote: (and to better control the shape of the curve)
What I haven't shown is that I check the shape using preview option (P) and correct areas that don't look smooth enough. (outside preview mode, triangulation lines prevent to properly see smoothness).

No problem on my side, just wanted to see that nobody spotted major flaws. I wanted to add some text comments, but I can't find again how to do that in Youtube editor (is it possible at all?)

OK, that is interesting to see. I am tentatively beginning to work a bit with LDPC and this helps a lot to understand.
I am used to working with vectors creating this kind of shapes, but cannot quite grasp it in LDPC.

From V 1.7.0:
New features:
  • Auto-corrections for primitive data when loading a file
Does that mean that primitives are broken down into triangles when reloading the file?
In V1.7.1 it's like this.
If nothing goes right, go left.

Sorry my mistake. Angry

This only happens if the file is saved in V1.7.1 and opened with V1.6.9.

I am having difficulties with snapping vertices to the grid.
To put it simply: it does not work for me.
When I draw a triangle that needs to have straight horizontal and vertical lines, the vertices do not snap to where I click.

Is there a way to align vertices?

Mmhhh... I see no way of NOT snapping on grid. What is your "move snap" value? a very low value could explain problems.
Otherwise, you can align vertices (select them then merge to average (x or y) ). Problem is that it's an average, so you end off grid! I'd prefer that, like rotate, these merge occured on value of nearest to cursor vertex! (hint, hint, Nils Wink )

Ok, seems better now somehow. I am making the sticker with "UNITED STATES" for the 10266 Moonlander set.
So the letters U, D and S are a bit more complicated due to the curves, but I think I got it right.

Next question: do I need to create the stickers with round edges?

OK, however judging this, they seem round

Looking at some other stickers (like 4216816a.dat) they have rounded egdes too.

Bug of the day:

* Select "Add Vertex [A]"
* Set a vertex. Watch out for the small coordination windows in the bottom right-hand corner
* Select "Add Primitive [F7]... Create a Spline..."
* Click to add the spline starting point
* Click to set the first direction of the spline
* Click to add the next point
* Click to set the next direction
* You CANNOT click to apply the segment count 'cos the "Vertex-Data" is still there hiding the segment count window underneath.

Workaround:

* Make sure the "Add Vertex [A]" button is not pressed before creating a spline.

Many thanks for this tool !
Question : Is it possible to reduce the number of digit after the coma in the file (currently 4) when I export to .dat a pattern ?

Best regards

It is generally best to reduce precision only in the very least stage of part creation. So I rely on datheader for that...

Hello, Philo and everyone!
I am Takeshi, from Japan, and this is my first post in this forum.
I've enjoyed LDraw system with MLCad and LDCad for about 4 years, now I want to participate in the LDraw community through creating parts.
The movie you uploaded is very nice, useful and easy-to-understand, thanks so much!
Since I'm a little familiar with vector graphic software such as Adobe Illustrator, rather than 3D modelling software, I've started from making printed parts.
This is my first part made with LDPatternCreator,
3010pb018 Brick 1 x 4 with Yellow Flower and 2 Green Leaves Pattern
https://rebrickable.com/parts/3010pb018/...ves-print/
I'll submit this part to Parts Tracker, after brushing-up the data, including headers.
I'm glad to join this community and forum!
Thanks,
Takeshi

P.S. My 3-years-old daughter recently started playing Lego System bricks, her first set (except Duplo) is Lego Friends "41397 Juice Truck".

welcome to the forums and congratulation for your first part! My suggestions for your part would be filling the room between the petals as much as you can in order to avoid long stretched triangles:

Willy, Thank you very much for your advice and I'll try it.
As filling the uncolored area was a little difficult, I wondered how to make it smarter.
I've understood that long stretched triangles are not desirable.

By the way, the part number "3010pb018" is not common with LDraw numbering scheme, thus will it be re-numbered as "3010p**" when I submit this parts to PT?

Any chance I could get a .zip file of the program vice an installer?

Yesterday, I'm glad to know this part 3010p0f has been finally certified by the PT activity log, as my first one.
Thank you everyone for kind advice and encouragement.

Now I'm creating more patterned parts and studying 3D modelling using LDPartEditor.

Thanks,
Takeshi

I get an unhandled exception every time I create a reference line. The error message is this:

I see "mono" in there a lot, and I feel like I read that's a problem with LDPC. Could that be it?

After nearly finishing a project, I was unable to load it again, instead finding this error message:

I fear all is lost, unless I can find a way to resolve this. Huh

Please upload your *.lpc file here and I will try to rescue it.

I can't provide full support for running LDPatternCreator under MacOS X.
There is no offical support for the .NET Framework under MacOS X.

I should either re-write LDPatternCreator (platform independently) or integrate it into LDPartEditor.
This is something which requires a lot of freetime effort.

Standalone version?

There is currently no standalone version.
*.lpc files need to be registered, the program requires a temporary folder for the integrated batch processes and also a folder for its configuration.
All in all, it is not trivial to create a working standalone version.

Thanks, I did eventually get the project finished. I start over a lot anyway so it wasn't such a big deal. :-)

I'm running windows programs under Wine, so if there's something about yours that doesn't work, it suggests the problem is more with Wine than with LPC. Can you at least tell where the error is happening? It's all gibberish to me!
