  Starting into Parts Authoring
Posted by: Cam's Bricks - 2024-05-03, 1:20 - Forum: Parts Authoring - Replies (1)

Hello all,

I have made custom parts using direct conversions of STL and OBJ files, as well as made assemblies of currently existing parts. I would like to dive in further to help out with getting new parts both recently released as well as missing parts from the past.

Is there a beginner's guide for this kind of thing?

The first thing I notice is that many of the box primitives are sized 2LDU in one or more directions thus making any real measurements being taken having to then be divided by 2. Is there some reason behind this? I come from a manufacturing background so I like my models to not have to have additional steps to read and understand their measurements. Does the underlying reason for this propagate through out the LDraw system?

Off to read more. Thanks for taking time to help a newbie.

  Suffix codes
Posted by: Orion Pobursky - 2024-05-03, 1:01 - Forum: Official File Specifications/Standards - Replies (1)

There's been some confusion and discussion about the codes after the p/c/d parts.

Composites © and Sticker shortcuts (d)  do not have themes. These suffixes should use the first available code starting with 00.

Historically, patterns (p) have had their suffixes in themes. These parts can continue to be assigned to the next available in those legacy themes. If the theme is used up (e.g. p00-p0z exist) then the author can assign whatever code is available regress of theme.

Once all of the p/c/d00-zz codes are used for a given part number, we will progress to using p/c/dXXXX codes.

The library spec will be updated shortly to reflect this change.

Hi all,

Now that Studio’s Eyesight has been open sourced, I managed to build and run it natively on Linux 🥳 and to make Studio use it seamlessly 🥳🥳 and with the GPU too 🥳🥳🥳🥳

If someone wants to give it a try, I wrote a howto.

Question Rendering error/scratchy appearance in LEOCad
Posted by: Thomas Turgyt - 2024-05-01, 20:39 - Forum: LDraw Editors and Viewers - No Replies

LEOCad says there is an error whenever I try to render my model. Also, from time to time whenever I boot it up the texture of the base is scratchy and staticky and the ball thing in the corner is full of overlapping black and white madness. Quitting and then opening a few times usually fixes the problem for some reason. I have no idea on how to fix either, so any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
LEOCad version 23.03 on laptop with macOS 10.13.6.

  Custom parts/stickers for LEOCad
Posted by: Thomas Turgyt - 2024-05-01, 17:13 - Forum: Help - Replies (7)

Hi, I was wondering how you make custom parts/stickers for your models in LEOCad. I use a Macbook Pro with macOS High Sierra, and I need to make a few specific minifig pieces, stickers, and bionicle-esque masks to make my models actually look presentable. Also, once I have the custom parts how do I add them to the LEOCad library?
LEOCad version is 23.03, macOS version is 10.13.6.
Thanks!

Boat Connectors for Hull and Deck
Posted by: Gerald Lasser - 2024-05-01, 12:13 - Forum: Parts Authoring - Replies (2)

One of the topics we touched during the Billund24 meeting was the level of detail withing the boat hullls. Usually there are some filltes there to strengthen the hull, some compartments that provide bouyancy (with the top attached) and of course the interlocking thingy.

Those interlocking fingers have been introduced in 2003/4 and are present ever since in basically all the floating hulls.

Although mainly invisible, in my opinion we should have the choice to show them.

To make this easier I have come up with a set of primitives that allow an easy use, even when scaling is necessary.

  • There are four primitives as a starting point (quarters)
    - one fixed and one variable each for the top and bottom locks, to adjust to the different drafts the hulls provide
  • Leading to six Primitives that can be easily applied
  • Each connector then needs only twp primitives.
  • An exception are slanted faces, where one need to use the quarters in order not to bleed through the surface.

To name them I proposed a scheme as follows:
  • Basic name: boatlock
  • Where is it used: top/bottom
  • What part is is: Connector section (fixed height), Base section (variable height)
  • Denomination: Quarter, with Centre

e.g.: "Boatlock Bottom Connector Quarter" Filename "boat-b-connq"
suggestions are welcome

Here's an overview:

Usage plain

Usage inclined surface

I will upload them to the PT and let's see from there

  [split] New Sticker Sheet search
Posted by: Orion Pobursky - 2024-04-29, 12:09 - Forum: Parts Tracker Discussion - Replies (7)

maybe someone else said that (but the idea is nice, like an inverted Pattern/Composite/Sticker Shortcut Reference from the sticker page side, could also be used for part variants)

Regardless of who suggested it, it was a good suggestion and it is now live on the PT:

  LDraw meeting in Billund 2024
Posted by: Orion Pobursky - 2024-04-29, 10:59 - Forum: General LDraw.org Discussion - Replies (7)

A few of the LDraw regular got together in Billund last weekend (Apr 26-28) for some camaraderie and discussion about LDraw.org. Additionally, we held an online conference with a few other invitee's.

In person:
Orion Pobursky
Willy Tschager
Philippe Hurbain (Philo)
Max Martin Richer
Magnus Forsberg

Online:
Gerald Lasser
Nils Schmidt
Rene Rechthaler
Fredrik Hareide

Meeting minutes:

General
- Orion presented the current state of the LDraw.org infrastructure including services used, software, and cost.

Discussion points

More communication with Stud.io team
- Would be nice but not required
- Not something worth pursuing in any concerted way
- The new zip file download is a large step forward in helping people get new parts into Stud.io
- Texture mapping compatibility is a concern for some but other felt it was not a huge deal

More reviews in the PT
- Over 7000 parts waiting for review
- Orion shared 2 new PT features to help out, the certify all tool and the user parts for review on the user dashboard
- Willy shared a concern with locating files to review. Hard to tell if a part waiting admin still need subfiles certified.
- Orion implemented an icon in the status to show if a part was not releasable
- The idea of turning off submits for some period was suggested. Other felt this would not solve the problem as people would just not review and wait out the no submit periods.

Modernize Community Model
- Start a Discord - Done, PM Orion for an invite
- Orion adamant that Discord will not replace the forums as Discord is not Googlable
- Fredirik suggested a tutorial on how to install an update.

Update or Rewrite Bylaws
- Bylaws need to be updated to acknowledge the extistance of video conferencing, allow in person meetings
- SteerCo not really that busy with things, maybe 3 year terms?
- Membership list is super old and there's been no formal mechanism to join since we switched from PostNuke over a decade ago

Reapply for RLOC status
- No interest in this.
- Not a good fit any more and no benefit as LEGO never communicated with us when we did have status.
- LEGO no longer does fan tours or meetings

Library Shortcuts
- Distinction between assemblies as parts LEGO distributes as one unit (e.g Legs + Hips, Torso + Arms + Hands) and shortcuts as discreet parts that are combined for convenience (e.g. a complete Minifig, Helmet + Visor)
- Orion wants torso assemblies in the library
- Nobody wants these types of to clog the PT
- Orion suggested having an enforced submit template. This would require at least one uncolored assembly to undergo the complete review process and be released. After that users could submit assemblies templated to the official assembly. These would required only an admin review to be added to the library
- Orion suggested a separate folder for assemblies. Consensus was that all parts should be in the parts folder.
- Sticker shortcuts were discussed. More discussion is needed but consensus seems to be allowing all types of sticker shortcuts as long as they are for parts in the set for the sticker sheet.
- Rene suggested a sticker shortcut reference where a sticker sheet number could be entered and all the stickers and the shortcuts could be viewed on one page. Orion is 95% away from implementing this

Other smaller discussions:
- Classic motorcycle helmet is wrong. How to fix it was discussed
- Getting rid of the .exe update installer was brought up by Orion. Fredrik said he used it as a newcomer. Decision was to keep it.

--

Thanks to all who participated. I plan to have more regular video meeting with the community and team. It will be harder as I'm 8-9 hours behind European time where most of the other regulars are based but could probably make it work on the weekends.

New meta in LDConfig for default category icon in editors
Posted by: Willy Tschager - 2024-04-28, 13:40 - Forum: LDraw Editors and Viewers - Replies (8)

Guys,

the following is addressed mainly to LDCad where the first part in a CATEGORY is used as mascot for it but all other editors. This leads to very strange results where "Slope" is represented by a Duplo Slope 2x2x1,5 or "PLate" by a Duplo Plate 1x2 with overhang. In LDCad this is editable through the pbg files in the AppData folder - not very user friendly.

I suggest adding a new meta to the LDConfig.ldr defining the mascot for the single LDraw categories:

0 !CATEGORY Plate MASCOT 1 16 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 part.dat DESCRIPTION Plates

Thoughts?

w.
