  Overview of adjustable parts
Posted by: Roland Melkert - 2012-10-03, 21:39 - Forum: Parts Authoring - No Replies

Hi all, does anyone have or know of an easy way to get an overview of all adjustable (dynamic) parts in the official library?

I mean parts like shock absorbers, pneumatic cylinders, switches, etc. Technically this even includes minifigs and other figures but for the time being I'm concentrating on parts with only a few number of configurations.

I'm assuming most of these parts exist out of subparts that make up the static parts. The information I'm especially looking for is those parts' 'in rest' type 1 lines, and (of lesser importance) the associated range of motion.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

  Where's Greg been?

Hope everyone had a great summer or winter depending on where you are in the world!

Work has been absolutely crazy the last few months - wrapped up a big project only to join a bigger one!

Also, I can't afford my apt. where I work on top of home where I live any more, so been trying to move this past month to a smaller place for during the work-week. Unfortunately the first things packed up were all my hobby stuff, including the computer.

As a result, any images/links to my Comcast pages may break after this weekend, I'll try to find a new host for them soon.

Anyone is welcome to pick up my part modeling slack (if you haven't already), and when life settles down this winter, I should be back into the game.

I'm also getting back into physical models in anticipation of Polar Lights 1/350 Classic Star Trek kit

On the brick front, my family loves the new Monster Fighters theme, and we picked up the Haunted House, it is actually awesome. We're also looking forward to the UCS B-Wing and this years Winter Village Cottage.

Newbee looking for basic tool set for part authoring
Posted by: Steve Barile - 2012-09-26, 22:30 - Forum: Parts Authoring - Replies (2)

Hi All,
I'm a long time MLCad, LPub, ... yada yada yada user and pretty familiar with 3D concepts etc… I’m playing around with making custom parts and would like to model first in 3D. I have had limited success with Notepad and MLCad. It’s nice that MLCad can move primitives but sucks that you can’t scale them (at least I don’t know how to scale in MLCad).

Is there an LDraw part authoring tool chain for part dev that is more 1990’s rather than 1970’s text editing! ;-)

Thanks Guys!

Thumbs Up Parts preview catalog
Posted by: Celeyron - 2012-09-25, 7:44 - Forum: Part Requests - Replies (5)

Hello everyone,

First of all, a big "Thank you" for these programs : you made a little boy's dream real !

I've a simple question concerning the list of official updated parts . It's hard, sometimes, to find the part we need in the preview corner of MLCad. Is there any catalog of parts preview, any PDF wich lists all the Official parts with their name, number and little preview ? It could be easier to have it on paper.

Thank you one more time for your answers !

Dom

PS : Sorry for the language errors, i'm French !

  Those ever-lasting moments of head-desking
Posted by: Santeri Piippo - 2012-09-25, 0:27 - Forum: Parts Authoring - Replies (2)

I was collecting parts from my container thingies so that I could put together a jetrax for the sake of 2008 (which was IMO Bionicle's gold year).. noticed I had one of the engine turbine parts missing. Took quite a few days of looking around everywhere until I finally found it in the only place I had forgotten to look at.

So there I was sitting on my bed and thought about those past attempts I had made to make another LDraw part again (stuff like modeling the teeth of the rotating blades, staff of fragmentation, etc) with the turbine part in hand and a wild idea caught me. LDraw's parts tracker revealed that there was an earlier attempt, but being 16-division-circles and lacking some geometry (like the fan interior details), I decided to give my own attempt on the part instead of trying to finish the existing one. Changing resolutions in circles tends to be pretty bad on one's hairs.

So I got the main skeleton done, along with the outer fan blades (which were challenging but doable with a bit of philotools), when I suddenly realized -- those smaller, outer fan blades weren't as systematic as the inner ones. My usual tricks (or at least the ones I still remember) couldn't really help this time around. It was at this point I remembered the LDD/LUT parts that were around when I was active last time around. After a bit of searching, found the LUT version of the part, complete with the outer fans. Just as I was already hoping to be able to finish the part, I noticed to my shock...

Yeah. the blade was too small. If I had remembered the LUT version from the beginning I probably wouldn't be feeling as foolish as I do now. What do?

  The LDraw "Community"
Posted by: Martin James - 2012-09-24, 8:37 - Forum: Website Suggestions/Requests/Discussion - Replies (13)

Help! I'm lost, confused, and not sure what to do first/next/last.

Somewhere in the great rewrite of this site I seem to have disappeared, as do most of the things I used to recognize under the umbrella of "Community". I used to have an account ("Emjay") but it doesn't work any more. I managed to create a new one, with exactly the same user name and details, to give me access to the Forums so I can at least get this far.

But my main problem is this:

My "Virtual Minibrix" parts library survived the rewrite, and now appears under "Parts" then "Other Parts Libraries". This is fine -- it is still very popular, and has a large and still-growing user base. However, somehow I need to get the entry on that page changed, as the site is moving to a new URL.

So how do the "Community" pages now get updated? And does the concept of user contributions still exist?

  Lego Lord of the Rings
Posted by: Reuben Pearse - 2012-09-22, 20:46 - Forum: Parts Authoring - Replies (2)

Hi guys,

Has anyone started creating parts for the new Lego Lord of the Rings sets? Some of the new minifigures are really cool!
I recently got my son set 9471 (Uruk-Hai Army). The Uruk-Hai swords and shields are really neat!

Some of the new LOTR sets feature a new version of the 1x2 brick that has indentations in the piece. See here for more details.

It looks like some of the minifig patterns will be fun to create. Any takers?

I look forward to seeing some LOTR parts on parts tracker soon.

Bye for now

Reuben

  Space Police II Prison Train

  LDPatternCreator - Release 1.4.3
Posted by: Nils Schmidt - 2012-09-22, 16:50 - Forum: Parts Author Tools - Replies (2)

Hey,

Here is the new LPC 1.4.3!

Please uninstall older versions of this software before installing a new version.
Your configuration won't be deleted if you have already version greater than 1.3.1 installed on your machine.

Change log:

New features:

  • The DAT file header parser is improved.
  • The T-junction detector is improved.
Fixed bugs from 1.4.2 and older:
  • LPC crashes when a subfile gets imported as part and then exported as DAT (only for non-standard subfile names like XXXpXX[a-z].dat).
  • Blank lines in part metadata are not deleted.
  • The object mode (tringle, vertex, primitive) is not restored after closing the preview mode.

(see full list of tickets for 1.4.3)

I included a short readme.htm in the installation directory.

Cheers & Leg Godt

Nils
