The Lego Modeling community has a wealth of open models and tools. There is a wealth of documentation on the tools but it is scattered. I would like to propose a forum for tool documentation like the Ldraw wiki which appears to not be kept up. In one place, you could find a list of tools, tool comparisons, tutorials, actual examples. Newbies could indicate what is most helpful and expand the knowledge base. An archive could exist for retired materials.

The 2017-01 LDraw Parts Update has been now been released. This adds 717 new files to the core library, including 509 new parts and 33 new primitives. This update also includes updated versions of the colour configuration files (LDConfig.ldr and LDCfgalt.ldr) thanks to Willy Tschager and Magnus Forsberg.
Thanks are of course due to all the part authors who created or corrected parts for this release, including several first-time authors. The reviewers also play an important role in keeping files moving through the Parts Tracker and deserve just as much credit.
You can preview the new parts in 2017-01 here, download the zip-file update or Windows install package here. Alternatively you can use the LDView menu option File | Check for Library Updates... to install the update.

Hi,
I wanted to release this version in 2018, but I completed it earlier... why should I wait?
![[Image: imgDuke2.png]](https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-fi18ywwsEUo/VOOuvkpsdzI/AAAAAAAAASw/Ax0RRFkleKA/s64-no/imgDuke2.png)
As always, you can download LDPE from this page:
http://nilsschmidt1337.github.io/ldparteditor/
Changelog:
(6 new features and 7 bug fixes)
With this release you will be able to... - ...use a SlantingMatrixProjector tool to generate shear matrices.
- ...save all your user settings in a file, and restore it when you want to (screenshot).
- ...restore your 3D view settings when you completed a PartReview.
- ...use ALT + UP/DOWN to move a line up and down in the text editor.
- ...see a progress bar when downloading files from the PT for PartReview.
- ...set the coplanarity threshold (Tools... -> Options...).
The following critical issues were fixed:
- Colour palette: The window was sometimes not wide enough.
- Sometimes long edges were hard to select until both vertices were visible.
- The logger did not detect errors while loading the workbench.
- An edge, or condline was selectable through a surface, even if it was hidden behind that surface.
- Ytruder generated triangles when it should generate quads.
- "Save As..." created a wrong part type (Flexible_Section).
- Divide by zero during Catmull-Clark subdivision
What will the next release 0.8.40 deliver? More features for subfile manipulation / bug-fixes.
The program was tested intensively with "real world" files.
However, it is still a beta version and something can go wrong in about 140.000 lines of code.
Make sure that you choose the right architecture for your OS and Java Virtual Machine (JVM) (64bit or 32bit).
A short guide how to check if a 64bit JVM is installed on your system is located at the bottom of this message.
- Download the zip-Archive
- Extract the archive content to the location of your choice
- On windows, double-click "run.bat" to start LDPE.
- On linux/mac, you have to excecute the shell script "run.sh" to start LDPE.
Please note that this software is in the beta stage. Although, this version was tested, there are already known issues for this release. There is a potential risk of data loss.
You can search for updates if you do the following steps:
- On windows, double-click "update.bat" to search for updates.
- On linux/mac, you have to excecute the shell script "update.sh".
I listen carefully to your requests and possible complaints. Please leave me a message, with your thoughts and wishes to further improve the software.
LDPE is a 3D CAD application: The overall system requirements are higher. While I recommend to use a powerful 64-bit multicore system, it could be possible, to run LDPE on older machines as well.
System Requirements:
Minimum System Requirements:
- 64-bit Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.8
- OpenGL 2.1 compatible Graphics Card
- Operating System (64-bit): Windows [7 or newer], Linux [e.g. Ubuntu Linux >=14.4], Mac OS X [>=10.6]
- CPU: Multicore-Processor e.g. Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon II (>2.0Ghz)
- RAM: 4GB
- Video-Memory: 1 GB
- Free Disk Space: 100 MB
Recommended Requirements:
- Operating System (64bit): Windows 7,8,10, Linux [e.g. Ubuntu Linux >=14.4], Mac OS X [>=10.6]
- OpenGL 3.3 compatible Graphics Card
- CPU: Multicore-Processor with 4 cores (or more)
- RAM: >4 GB
- Video-Memory: >1 GB
- Free Disk Space: 512 MB
- For a faster start, LDPartEditor and the LDraw™ library should be installed on an SSD.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to check your JVM version (32- or 64-bit):
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You can try on the command line:
If it's not a 64-bit version, you'll get a message that looks like:
This Java instance does not support a 64-bit JVM. Please install the desired version.

| James Jessiman Memorial Award for 2017 awarded to Chris Dee |

The LDraw.org Steering Committee is pleased to announce that the 2017 James Jessiman Memorial Award (JJMA) recipient is LDraw Parts Library Administrator Chris Dee.
There was no discussion over the recipient for the this year's James Jessiman Memorial Award and the SteerCo reached consensus immediately.
Chris discovered LDraw in 1997 or 1998 after abandoning a similar project to build a LEGO parts library in PostScript. The initial motivation was to create replacement instructions for second-hand sets he had acquired, and to produce instructions for the alternative models - this was in the days before the existence of internet resources like PICSL and its predecessors. Frustrated at the very first hurdle by the omission of part 4080 (Tipper Bucket 4 x 6) he set about authoring it and was amazed to see it released in the 1998-03 update. More parts followed, and circumstances found Chris concentrating on the patterned minifig torsos, which had largely been overlooked at that time. The intellectual challenge of part authoring and the then lack of functionally rich model creation tools (like MLCad) overtook the instruction creation idea. He soon installed Steve Bliss' LDraw Add-On program (LDAO) and with L3Lab as a renderer found an efficient toolset for part authoring - a combination he still favours today. Appointment as the a second LDraw Library Admin followed in 2003.
Beside the regular library updates Chris had the enormous task to standardises the headers of more than 3300 files with the primary purpose of aligning the library with the Contributor Agreement back in 2008.
More information on the JJMA can be found at: http://www.ldraw.org/article/222.html

Is there a stud that is sort of the inverse of 87087.dat "Brick 1 x 1 with stud on 1 side"? I.e. a stud that has a socket instead of a stud, but in the same location? Brick 1 x 2 or Brick 1 x 4 versions would be okay too.
Thanks.
