Edit*
This post was sorely missing an important detail: Thank you to anyone who can help in anyway, as a 3d modeler I have a good idea of what I am asking. I only feel marginally comfortable doing it because I'm on a site of extreme enthusiasts. Having grown up through the 90's I feel like these sets are some of LEGOs finest and a bit of a must for people who can no longer reasonably find these pieces. Again, thank you, to everyone whose made this program or added to it. I've had Ldraw for less than 48 hours now and have already made; UFO mini figure officer (with custom gun) and 2847 UFO Flyer, 6915 Warp Wing Fighter and currently I am 1/3rd through 6979 Star Fighter.
*Edit

Hello, I'm Endianprime and I'm very excited about Ldraw. To that end, some of my favorite sets are missing a few key parts or decals. I do 3d modeling myself but I work in Zbrush and mostly do organic shapes. CAD is about as far from what I do as you can get, still in the future I may look into part editing but smaller steps for now.

sorry about the lack of a real name. I did see it was tradition but online I only have one name.

I have read the request guidelines, researched the requested parts on the appropriate sites and verified that they are not in production or being requested (with one exception, see below).

Part request quick description
I am making a request for 3 insectoid parts, the 2 larger wings and the stinger (part numbers given below).
I am also requesting decals for the following: Insectoid: 2 small wings, Stingray: quarter saucer, UFO: 1x2 circuit board (also used in star wars millennium falcon)

Edit*
I seriously just found the UFO decal part I was asking for, its been renamed from: 3069bpx32 to: 3069bp51.
I had done a tone of searching for it, by part number, description, online and in Ldraw (LDcad). Anyways, you can ignore the missing UFO decal listed below

As for small steps, making patterns for existing geometry is relatively simple, at least for flat ones. Maybe you should try that first? Tool of choice is LDPatternCreator

Is there anything preventing you from using http://www.ldraw.org/cgi-bin/ptdetail.cg.../71603.dat (apart from beeing unofficial, which is not really an issue!)

I may have a look at creating shape for large wing.

Nah, I was a little worried the stinger didn't work due some mention about a size being off but it seemed that was also fixed. If you say its good then I'll give it a go, I downloaded all the .dat files for it and its sibling I was just apprehensive to install it.

As for the large wing, I really appreciate it.

As for the pattern creator, I will look into that, thanks for the recommendation. About all of those missing decals, are those done using standard uv mapping and textures or does Ldraw do details like that differently than other 3d programs. I use Zbrush and Poser and my girlfriend uses 3dsMax, maybe we can make those ourselves, if it works like traditional textures. I'm not sure, LEGO parts are super specific in terms of sizing. Its less an art and more a science.

I found these: Thought they might help with the insectoid wing:

Do you know if the printed area is raised or recessed? We might need to adapt the part 30231 first. The part at PT is not made correct yet.

You say in your first post "decal", but this is a printed pattern. Right?

Sooo... I made a deep search in my oddball parts, and found again a pair of large insectoid wings. Structure is fully symmetrical (so the left/right version depend only on the side where the print is applied). No rise or recess for the pattern. The line that appears of the model of the small wing present on PT materialize the polishing difference: middle patternable area is shiny, border is grainy, slope brick style (but finer grain). Dunno if we can do something about this...

Magnus, if I understand you correctly (I'm still learning the lingo) there is an error with the small insectoid wing, which is detail at Part Tracker (PT?). Which if your willing to correct any issues with that part, then that's fantastic. As for the word 'decal' I tend to use words lightly with vague meanings, its not intentional. Its been a while since I've held one of those wings in my hand but I am pretty sure they are printed. Of course Philippe actually has one and through out some very technical descriptions which sounds like they are more useful.

Philippe, Thank you for searching for that part and providing those details.

While we are on the subject part number:x239
found on Part Tracker here: http://www.ldraw.org/cgi-bin/ptdetail.cg.../71603.dat

seems to be missing the ridging detail along the transparent plastic:
https://img.bricklink.com/ItemImage/PL/x239.png

I just want to say thank you both for being so helpful, I really love Ldraw. I used to have a decent amount of LEGOs as a kid and they are now lost, likely in deep storage and I just don't have the money to replace them. Being able to make these sets again, work with these parts and make my own original designs is such a rewarding pass time. Missing these parts was kinda downer but your helping so fast its crazy. Your excellent assistance is really inspiring me to be a contributing member of the community. I'm not sure about parts authoring, it seems so precise and technical and that's just not how my brain tends to work but I've learned the program so fast. In time I have some ideas for tutorials and if I can figure out one final detail I might be able to release completed sets rigged for easy animation.

Thanks for your kind words Wink

Cleaned up this part: http://www.ldraw.org/cgi-bin/ptdetail.cg.../30231.dat
(subparted grainy and shiny areas, subparted arm hinge for reuse in large wing, removed fake separating line)

I really appreciate you fixing up that small wing. I downloaded all 4 of the files from the link you sent me and placed them in Documents/LDraw/parts (win7). Using the search (insect) I pulled up one wing and 3 on/off parts (I use LDcad) one hinge, one center plate for the wing and one outer plate. My questions are:

1. did I put the parts in the right folder, I'm pretty sure I did but best to be safe.

2. why don't I see two small wings, the original and the one you made. I was never asked to overwrite a file so they both should be there.

3. the on/off parts are for part authors so they can add the printed details right? or am I supposed to be able to make use of those?

I seen several of these (stinger) for sale on Ebay for 12 bucks, probably not now but when I have a little more money I might just pick one up and send it to you.

Again, I really appreciate the help.

This place makes sense, but exact location depends on your installation. But since you see things in LDCad, it's probably OK.

Mmh.... You should not "see" the separated hinge and plates. This means that you put the subparts (those whose file names end up as ...s0x.dat) in the wrong folder. They should go in the subpart folder (Documents/LDraw/parts\s). This also answer your (3) question: you should not be able to access them Wink

Since it seems you placed the subpart in the wrong folder, the wing should appear almost "empty", with only edge and studs. You probably failed to overwrite the old version, and it's thei one that you get (the old version can be distinguished as it had an edge line separating center and outer regions, new version doesn't have this line).

Forgot to comment on this... This part is dirt cheap on Bricklink, less than one buck. And if you go with the transparent part only it goes down to less than 10 cents Wink
Problem is shipment cost and minimum order. If I happen to buy something on BL and by chance the vendor has one of these parts I'll buy one.

Wow, having gone back through I found that I epicly failed this installation. I discovered that I had failed to download the actual part and put the 4 subfiles as you suggested in the wrong folder. Thank you for the help.

This part is awesome, I am so looking forward to some original designs with these. As well as tackling the standard ones.

Sounds great man, I think I'll look into that, if shipping ain't bad maybe I'll just see about them shipping it to you.

I now have a pattern ready for upload, of the small wing.
But first I want to ask if you wanted to have a go at it yourself?

No. I'm asking you. Do you want to try LDPatternCreator and make this yourself, or is it OK with you if I upload my part to the PT?

Anyway, if one of you wants to have a try to large one, here is a scan...

Its good with me man, I'll give that program a shot some day but there's no way I'd learn it and produce that part in a reasonable amount of time and certainly not as good as you've got it there. Actually, if your willing would you also do the pattern on the large wing?

I'll start working. But the scan from Philo made me question my choise of colours. Is it solid white/orange or metallic silver/gold ?

Making patterns is a good way to start making parts. I remember my first atempt as an part author was making some patterned parts I was missing.
