The huge amount of pictures might be a problem indeed, although some browsers are getting 'less good' at wasting resources.

Adding the picture dimensions to the img tags (if not so already) might help. That way the browser can format the page without reading all the actual images, i could imagine some optimizations are based on that information.

Or make multiple html files, linked to by (cross) index page(s).
