The behavior you are describing seems linked to the amount of content you're placing on the page.
When you click on a model in a step-group page, this gives the indication to display the model in the 3D Viewer. In the next major release, I will try to minimize the amount of page refresh calls which may be the reason your selection is not persisting.
In the future, I'll try to update the placement framework which is at the root of many issues but at this moment it's not a priority for me.
