Problems with Windows 8

Problems with Windows 8
#1
Hi! I have tried searching the forums for this problem, but without success! If I've missed a post - I apologise. I tried to install L Draw All-in-One installer onto a laptop running Windows 8. The laptop is a Sony Vaio with Win 8 Professional 64 bit installed. The install went OK, but towards the end of the install there were a number of error messages along the lines of "Can't find file". At the end the final install a message said that Pov-Ray had failed to install. The main programs were installed in the 'Program (x86)' folder. Should I have installed elsewhere?? Such as direct onto the C drive?? Any help appreciated. By the way - all other programs worked fine!

Hi,

please answer the following questions:

* Was POV-Ray already installed on your computer?
* Did you select POV-Ray to be installed by the AIOI?
* Did you select LGEO to be installed by the AIOI?

The "Program (x86)' folder" was the right choice. Please sent the "Setup Log.txt" file in "C:\Windows\LDraw" folder to

Thanks for your reply!

In order to answer your questions -

No, Pov-Ray was not already installed.
Not sure how to answer this - I just ran the all-in-one installer, I don't remember the installer asking about this?!
Same reply as above - I don't remember the installer asking such questions?

Sadly I cannot send the file! I have had other problems with this laptop. Mcaffe Virus Protection was already installed - and I tried to get rid of it - not easy! I had to resort to System Restore - and this wiped out the LDraw install. This was nothing to do with LDraw, which worked fine after the install. I ran and configured MLCad and some other programs which installed with it - they worked fine.

I can run the install again and answer your questions if this will help??

Please do so. It will overwrite your files but the settings stored in the registry will be untouched. Make sure you don't uninstall prior installing.

Hi, Thanks for your post. I have re-installed the program. There is no "Setup.txt" log file I can find in the LDraw folder. I have, however, recorded all the messages I got during the install!

Error 1 through 5 -"The specified file could not be found" - there was no location or description of which file! This error occurred 5 times.
Error 6. - "Windows cannot find 'C:\Users\warwick\AppData\Local\Temp\ir_sf_temp_0\povwin 36.exe' Make sure you typed the name correctly, then try again"
Error 7. - The folder containing the POV-Ray program could not be found. Browse for the folder usually named 'Pov-Ray for Windows vX.X There was a standard browse window, but I could not locate the folder. The options were "make new folder" "OK" or "cancel". I opted for cancel!
Error 8. - Pov-Ray.ini file was not found on your computer. If POV-Ray has been installed, the path to the LGEO library have to be added manually.

I searched for POV-Ray manually after the install had finished and found the following file listed. "Installer Package 'povwin362-64bit'. Attempting to start the installer (usual double click), the following error message came up.

"The installer package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor that this is a valid Windows Installer package"

Hope this helps you!

Did you look in "C:\Windows\LDraw" or "C:\Program Files (x86)\LDraw"? It is supposed to be in "C:\Windows\LDraw"

Error 7 and 8 are produced by the search routine I coded in for the LGEO paths and are a consequence of the first events. It sounds like a UAC issue where the POV installer misses proper rights. I'll have to investigate. You could try to download the installer from the POV site:

http://www.povray.org/

install POV manually and see if the error occurs again.

Hi! Apologies for the delay in replying to your suggestion. I am having new central heating fitted & the house is in chaos! I downloaded the following installer from POV-Ray - "povwin362-64 bit"; as I have a 64 bit system.

On trying to install the program the default directory was given as "C:\Users\warwick\AppData\Roaming\POV-Ray\v3.6".

I changed this to "C:\Program Files(x86)". However, on starting the installation the following error message came up -

"Error 1303. The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\bin. The installation cannot continue. Log on as an administrator or contact your system administrator."

I tried to install the program in "C:\Program Files", but with the same result.

The fact that I AM logged on as an administrator seems to have been ignored.

Maybe I am wrong.

Did you already try to run the installer ..as admin. I think this is necessary regardless your logon.

Your thinking of Microsoft Vista. This has the option of right clicking an "exe" program and selecting the option "Run as administrator". Windows 8 has no such option!

I don't know what's wrong with your Windows 8, because mine certainly has the option to run as administrator when right-clicking on an exe file in Explorer. In any event, all installers should run as admin automatically.

Thanks Travis for stepping in here. My Win 8 also has the option for all exe files.

It occurred to me that the "Run as administrator" option may go away if you completely disable UAC, since it's pointless in that setup. It's visible even then in Windows 7; I'm not sure about Windows 8.

Thanks for all your replies, and sorry for the long silence (have been very busy lately - with non LEGO projects!). Everybody who has replied about "execute as administrator" for .exe files - are you using a Sony Vaio computer?? I have discovered that Sony has made a LOT of specialised changes to the system! Wish I had known this before I bought the laptop!! I have managed to install POV-Ray - to its default location when I click on "install"! Now, how do I link to to the LDraw files??

You have to generate the POV-Files by LDView or something else, then you can open the .pov files with POV-Ray...

To turn off all the Vaio stuff, you should try to make a clean installation of your OS. Try to get a clean copy of windows and reinstall your complete machine. (Note: be sure to make a backup of all your files before, Note2: You are doing this on your own risk ;-) )

hi there,

I have just recently installed LDraw on my windows 8 laptop. When the download had finished,
it only installed the following programmes:
MLcad 3.4
leoCAD
SR 3D Builder 0.9.5.9
LDview 4.1
LPub 4.0.0.11
LDGlite 1.2.5
sticker generator 3.1
and LDFind 1.3.5.3
LDraw had not turned up and I was a little worried.
Do you know what is wrong? and what I can do to fix it?

thanks,
asher

I'm not entirely sure I understand your question, but I think you're expecting an "LDraw" program to be on your computer. LDraw isn't really a program any more. In fact, the original DOS programs won't even run on 64-bit Windows versions (which are the norm now). "LDraw" is the parts library used by all the LDraw-based programs. You would use MLCad, LeoCAD, or SR 3D Builder to create LDraw models.
