4559-1 Cargo Railway Train

4559-1 Cargo Railway Train

Hi all! New here. I come on a mission on behalf of a fellow enthusiast.

Friend and I are remaking LEGO Loco and we wanted to put the 4559 train in it, since the game's promo materials include it.

I noticed on a Stack Overflow post that one Iván Sánchez had recreated this model in LeoCAD, so I reached out to him to ask for it so that I could render sprites with it. He very kindly sent it over and also asked if I'd care to get it submitted to the OMR. So here I am. Smile

I've attached the current state of the model. I modified it a bit to make sure it included all the listed parts. What's next?  Big Grin

Thanks everyone!

Hi and welcome!

Basically, all that's left to do for you now is waiting to get it approved (takes some time).

Usually, a render of your choice from that model would be nice to give a first impression (but I don't think it's mandatory).

Formatting etc. looks fine as far as a quick look could tell, anyways the rules are a bit less strict at the moment. Just a few notes:
*Sub-Models don't require a separate "Theme" line each time
*"0 NOFILE" what caused this?

My personal comments regarding the actual model:
*Is it intentional that the train is "off rails"?
*being a bit pedantic (and having this set for a long time) the ramp sub-model is connected to one of the straight rails in the instructions Tongue
*stickers for the cockpit piece should be already available (same for the Octan guy's torso 973p5z.dat)
*connector cable (the wedge thing) should be dark grey, also if you want to include it, 2 might be better

Best regards,
Chris

EDIT:
Shortcut to the stickered Train Front is now available: https://library.ldraw.org/parts/52044

Btw, we already had a thread for 1996 Trains Sets Wink :

Oops, I searched for train threads but it didn't pull anything up. 😅 Should I delete this thread and post in that other one?

To be honest, I have no idea.

I'm not sure how to have it neatly not be--snapping tools in LeoCAD weren't all that helpful and I couldn't for the life of me find the track layout editor I saw mentioned when I searched.

Ha, funny you mention this--I originally did two and then was worried it would be a technically incorrect part manifest since, if I remember right, the two were connected by one wire. But I am new to this. 😬

I can swap out these parts and upload the revised version. Going to try my hand at the on-track placement a little longer. Thanks for the response!

Looks like that one line is caused automatically by LeoCAD saving.

I tried a couple other LDraw tools, but couldn't get the train to snap for some reason. It kept ending up embedded in the tracks. Any tips? Smile

Getting it to sit perfectly on the rails is a big challenge indeed.

I would start by moving the wagon parts into container submodel.

Then inside that model make sure the movable wheel assemblies are also in a submodel.

With this you should be able to place it easier on the rails using its bottom center as a guide and adjusting the wheel pivot angles.

If you are a perfectionist you could calculate the needed angles Big Grin

1) The Other Thread:

Well it can stay here, I guess. People will likely find it anyways. For some reason the 1996 stuff is all over the place; maybe I'll post some links in the main thread one day, for sake of completeness.

2) "Off Rails":

Roland already made some good suggestions. I think it can be placed with connectivity in LDD, but it's still far from perfect.
You can also look for examples at the OMR, maybe something can be recycled.

However, even there are some that are, well... not perfect  Big Grin

3) Connector Cable:

There's also the other end of the cable:

Tought why not give it a try:

I used these steps:

Move all wagon subpart into a submodel.
Inside the new model move the wheel parts into 2 submodels (could be one if they where the same, but they are not).
Inside the wheel submodels shift all parts so their pins are at 0,0,0
Correct their positions inside the wagon model.
Move all wagon parts so the wheel submodel containing the magnet sits at 0,0,0

Inside the main model move the wagon submodel so it sits on the straight rail.
Now you can rotate the whole wagon so the second wheel base aligns with the center of the rail curve. (I used a temparay axle to 'project' the connector hole on the bottom plate with the center of the rails).
Use the same angle to rotate the magnet wheels back on the straight rail inside the wagon model.
And finally rotate the second wheel model so it aligns with the curved rail.

Hope this helps.

the small transformer wall plug is also at the tracker (unofficial)
https://library.ldraw.org/parts/34874
(only as a complete part laying next to the transformer, no need for a flexible cable)
