That one has been around for a long time. Strange number at BL though...

BL considers it’s a minifigure.
2454ps5 (the old number) is indicated as alternate ID on BL.

It’s a bit of a treasure hunt for such parts (= decorated parts that are categorized as minifigures).

That part could seriously benefit from a TEXMAP upgrade (leaving the existing pattern as the fallback).

I couldn't find either of my copies of this part, so I had to rely on a picture I found on the internet. I'm don't think I'm allowed to distribute my touched up texture version of that picture, but this is what I ended up with:

Here is the current geometry-based version of the part:

If anybody has a high-quality scan of the part, I can do the same treatment to it that I did to the picture I found on the internet (basically normalizing the "mostly black" bits to pure black and then converting the black and white to an alpha channel, then maybe playing with the levels). I can then submit the updated part to the parts tracker.

Don't have the part, so I can't help.
But it looks great, and would be a big improvement.

I managed to track down my copy of this part. My scanner's not the greatest, but it does work. I see that the print is actually silver, which isn't supported by TEXMAP, so I guess I'll use white.

I submitted a textured version to the part tracker:

https://www.ldraw.org/cgi-bin/ptdetail.c...54aps5.dat

It should be noted that LDView will ignore this updated file if you store it in <LDraw>Unofficial/parts, because it by default prefers official parts to unofficial updates. I'm not 100% satisfied with how the texture came out, and I don't like the fact that there's no way to indicate that the texture should be metallic silver instead of white. But I think it is better than the geometric version with its hundreds of skinny triangles.

Could this be a use case for the, as yet unused, gloss map feature of the TEXMAP spec?

Also, IDK if the PT supports gloss map submission. Answer: yes

I had forgotten that GLOSSMAP had been approved. Yes, this would be a great use for that. Does LDCad support GLOSSMAP? (Because LDView doesn't, and I'd feel a lot more comfortable about adding one if I were able to test to make sure I do it properly.)

Roland will have to speak to LDCad but I checked and Lasse's buildinginstructions.js WebGL package, which we use for the 3D view on the PT, does not.
