Start out with Friends and Junior Models

Start out with Friends and Junior Models
#1
Hi, I just finished Lego Software Power Tools book. So it is time for me to get building. I am planning on building some Friends and Junior models we have the real blocks at home.

There will be parts that are not in the library, e.g. animals and awnings. Is there something that describes going from a set of multiview images to 3d model in the Ldraw tool environment?

Also is LEGO City Town Fun in the Park - 60134 anywhere in the pipeline?

Sorry for the late answer... and welcome aboard!

Unfortunately there is little or no descrition of LDraw parts creation, it's mostly "oral tradition"! Of course we are here to answer your questions...
The tools of choice to create LDraw parts are LDPartEditor and (to create patterns) LDPatternCreator, both programs written by Nils Schmidt.
As for "multiview images to LDraw", do you mean creation of a 3D model using a photogrammetry tool then conversion into a LDraw parts? If so, the conversion is the easy part, first get your 3D model into STL ASCII file format (most 3D programs support this format) then use stl2dat conversion program. But the photogrammetry part is tougher, I was not able to get usable results so far...

A very basic tutorial can be found on my site:

Thank you. I was thinking of structure from motion algorithm. I do robotics/AI/multi-sensor fusion apps. I'll give these a try.

I'll be happy to follow your results!

Thank you, your tutorial is great for geometrically regular parts. But it is less clear how I can use these tools for parts like 6023093 or 6033016. [Image: 6023093.jpg] or [Image: 6033016.jpg]

The poodle, ref. 11575, is not available in LDraw library. But it is available in LDD, and thanks to a conversion tool is available from http://www.digital-bricks.de/en/file.php?part=11575 . This raw converted part is not completely up to LDraw standards and needs a bit of polishing, but it's a very good base!

The sign is in LDraw library, 13459.dat (adapted from LDD data too by yours truely!)

Thank you. Looks like I will need to learn about LDD, too.

Here is the incomplete model so far. I am now running into missing parts. 60616 Glass Door For Frame 1X4X6

10314 Brick 1X4X1 1/3. These should exist. I just do not know how to find them.

I was also running into problems knowing when the glass was properly inserted into frames. I was assuming they both should have the same origin, but that seems a bit off.

I also did not put on stickers. The shop address sign needs a cute 8. I am not certain if the sticker exists, or I need to learn how to make it. Then I need to learn how to install it on the brick. Would this become a new part number. So I have a lot to learn. Any help would be appreciated.

Quote:60616 Glass Door For Frame 1X4X6
Exist in two versions as unofficial parts on parts tracker
http://www.ldraw.org/cgi-bin/ptdetail.cg...60616a.dat
http://www.ldraw.org/cgi-bin/ptdetail.cg...60616b.dat
Most probably will be in next official library update...

Indeed missing. Most probably you can use the very similar 6191.dat Edit: now available as unofficial parts on parts tracker: http://www.ldraw.org/cgi-bin/ptdetail.cg.../10314.dat

Out of curiosity, what software do you use to create your models? Search is more or less easy, LDCad is very good (highly recommended!), LeoCAD is OK, MLCad quite bad (not recommended at all!)

Just opened your model and see that you use the obsolete MLCad... since you are beginning and hopefully don't have yet bad habits with this program, please, please try LDCad! http://www.melkert.net/LDCad

Yes it is off Sad
Attached your model where I adjusted position of glasses (and made them transparent!), and corrected position of many parts that were slightly off or floating in the air... otherwise looks good so far!

There are sooo many stickers existing... no this one doesn't exist. The simplest solution is to use this sticker generator: http://www.melkert.net/test/stickerGen.html
Note that stickers generated this way will appear blank in MLCad...

The lastest download has MLCAD, but in the distribution, LDCad is a beta.  The Lego SW book focuses on MLCAD. So that is what I went with. I am delighted there are improved alternatives. I will check out LDCad. Is there a difference in the formats? How could you tell what tool I used?

No, the file format is fully compatible between these tools, so you can interchange freely between these tools (and others!). Eg. the modifications made on your file were done with LDCad...

Be sure to have a look at the tutorials, as usage of LDCad is quite different from MLCad! http://www.melkert.net/LDCad/docs

Because it contains special metacommands (0 ROTATION CONFIG 0 0) MLCad specific...

Thank you. I am playing with LDCad now.
