Since I didn't actually test the upload capability, here it goes. Note that this may or may not adhere to the OMR spec. I didn't check.

Edit 1 - Now OMR Spec compliant

RE: Architecture Theme
By the way, what's the general feeling about submitting our own versions of models that already appear in the OMR? Is there any interest in having multiple versions, or is it intended to only hold a single copy of each official model?

I've been going through and building the entire Architecture theme myself, just because I like to. Smile I don't mind sharing what I've built, but I'm also just as happy not to bother OMRizing them if there's no need.

Yeah, one of the first things I do when starting a new model is I check to see which greys were used via bricklink and/or Peeron. Then I check to make sure the greys in color-bar (in MLCad) are set correctly, so that I can use them (these are edit-able, if you didn't know).

Another color that's easy to confuse is old-brown vs the new reddish-brown. I think this change happened around the same time as the grey -> bley conversion.

If you right-click on one of the color squares in the color toolbar, the color selector opens, and you can choose the color assigned to this square.

You're NOT reading my tutorials by heart?

http://www.holly-wood.it/mlcad/basic2-en.html

Step 23:

Use the color dialog also to permanently change the default colors in the Color bar. You might substitute color 7 - Light_Gray with the nowadays used color 71 - Light_Bluish_Gray or replace rare colors like Salmon or Bright_green with transparent or chrome colors.
Right-clicking the color button you want to change will bring up the color dialog. Select a color as you would do for a part, okay-ing, MLCad will store the information in its settings.

To identify a font just by its visual appearance ("does the 'g' look so-and-so... and so on"),
several databases on the web exist. They can help, even if you only have a small sample of letters.
I found playing with those quite funny. Maybe you already know of those.
For example: http://www.identifont.com

Re: font identification

Yes, I did try identifont in the past - but was not SO convinced by the result. And often the best match font costs an arm... So I prefer to use font preview of some tools (here I used Corel Draw) to identify the best font already present on my system.

The result is attached. Just use LDView to view it and mark use light.dat and replace standard light in preferences. Also a darker background is useful, so it looks nice.

Ok. The alias parts thing is frustrating for a number of reasons:
- Not illegal per the spec
- Does not affect the model in any way
- No way for me to not include them in my library since I work on the Mac OSX platform so the complete.exe install file for the library is not something I can use (not that I would anyway).

The .ldr extension was used since I had no submodels. Easily changed.

I've just booked onto an event being run by RIBA (The Royal Institute of British Architects). Here's a snippet about the event:

"Senior Design Manager at LEGO Simon Kent offers a unique insight to the world of LEGO and how his own training as a product designer led to having one of the best jobs in the world on the LEGO Creator design team. Simon takes you through the design processes at LEGO and uses case studies including the LEGO Creator house design, direct modular building, and world building design models. Simon will talk about how design details are added to houses and introduce the growing LEGO Architecture series."

More details here

I'll be at the Birmingham event in the UK on the 21st June. Let me know if you're coming!

Bye for now

Here a alternate colour version of the Imperial Hotel. The official colour choice is quite off (it seems tan has a abo in architecture).
So I used the rare colour salmon, which represents the real colour best in my opinion.
Mabye salmon is so out of use and was used so rarely they not even considered using it.

This is an alternate version using LDCad flexible elements, optimized for rendering in Studio. The flexible elements are as close to the correct length as I could get (133mm according to instructions, 133.11mm here).

Because this model already appears in the OMR, no attempt at OMR compliance was made.

This is an alternate version with the flex axles adapted for correct photoreal rendering in Studio. (I have opted for the corresponding "flat silver" rubber color on the axles.) EDIT: On further investigation, that may not be the right choice. The real part has a distinct sheen that's not well represented by the rubber color, at least in this renderer. I will update the file to revert to color 179.

OMR compliant: Yes, with all unofficial donor parts inlined. (The image shows the alternate French nameplate; in the model, the English version is used.)
Done with LDCad 1.6c, rendered in Studio 2.1.3 (4)

Wow, that's... a lot at once!

The new official rules state this:
Quote:The user (Model author) uploads the model to the LDraw forum and if there was a public discussion the admin mirrors it to the OMR 7 days (or later) after the last post in this discussion. For the event there hasn't been any discussion the upload should be done 7 days (or later) after the initial post. After the upload is done, the model file shall be deleted, so that the forum doesn't clutter that much.

But maybe an exception can be made (and send them in bulk to me). I mean, it's also a lot of extra work for you to make all those posts. Anyone?

As there is now a OMR site, I have a lot of sets to release.

I will send you a rar file with everything in it.
It's a bit of work yes, but that way, I can display renders and people can comment each model if there is a mistake.

Much more will follow...

Just a little heads up: this file (and a few others which I already added to the OMR website) isn't OMR conform. You need to include all unofficial parts in the .mpd file for it to be 'omr compliant' (which you can do easily with MPDCenter). I've fixed the ones already added to the OMR because I thought you just forgot some, but it seems you're just not doing it at all. Just a tip for future models Wink

Re: Architecture Theme

I wasn't aware of it. Maybe it's because I've added those parts to my official lirary, so MPDcenter doesn'g show it up.

Anyway, I personally don't like that at all. For several reasons :
I don't like to have anything which is not a part in my models.
I would not be able to use a LGEO equivalent for rendering a part if it is defined like that.
Ldview will simply download the part if it is missing
If the part is changing on the tracker, it will not show up in the model.
Imagine the origin is changing, it quite easy to see and to update. Same if name is changing.
I am 100% sure models will not be updated to remove the inlined part when it will be official.

I can't see any reason to inline the parts in the MPD. Maybe I'm missing something.

I would like my Models to stay like they are. I prefer to remove the OMR compliance, than inlining parts in it. I am almost sure that the onofficial parts are mainly patterns and the model will become automatically compliant when the part will be release. Otherwise it will need to be reworked.
Usually there is not a lot of parts that got renamed or that change origin during their life in the tracker.

If not possible, I would prefer to keep on adding my models at Eurobricks, than in the OMR. That would be a shame because I like ldraw, love the OMR idea and I've started to rework all my sets to make them OMR compliant (at least from my point of view).

So I'll say that this model would have been incredibly frustrating without LDCad. The set bin and flexible part functionally make this build enjoyable. Also, don't import this model directly into Studio. I had to separate the flex object files into their own custom parts for it to load correctly.

You are right, they do look strange also when the model is build "legally" (left). I did not like it this way, so I move the clips a bit which makes it look much more like the real thing (right) If TLG would have used a flexible hose, you could bend it to fit. I am missing the Al Muntaha restaurant, a horizontal bar looking towards the sea and I would have preferred the Emirates towers also a bit darker, LGB.
But overall, I like the model, nice building techniques, especially on the Burj Al Arab.

So with that done, if I'm not mistaken, the only gap in the OMR is 21044 Paris, and the last part needed to complete the theme is the curved windscreen for the Eiffel Tower? I think that would call for a celebration! Cool

I don't think so. We're all caught up with the nameplates, looks like you finished up what was missing from Tokyo…and everything from Trafalgar Square got done as well (but we're waiting on a new color for two of those parts).

I'll have the Paris model done before long, at least without the arches under the Eiffel Tower. :-( (I don't know why they couldn't just keep the flex axles instead…)
