Part 87580 Naming

Part 87580 Naming

Why is part 87580 called Tile 2 x 2 with Groove and 1 Stud? I feel it should be Plate 2 x 2 with 1 Stud to be consistent with Plate 1 x 2 with 1 Stud.

Not sure I agree. It is more tile than plate by three to one.

Although by that argument 6576 should be a tile too and arguably 88000.

This subject is discussed at length at http://www.ldraw.org/cgi-bin/ptdetail.cgi?s=3794b.

Although that discussion misses the myriad of other parts (official or otherwise) that have both tile and plate qualities. Where 88646, 6179, 6180, 4607, 4522, 6178, 6205 and 6177 (+print) are all considered tiles.

Overall it seems that de facto standard is that if you have more flat space than studs you should really be a tile.

That said, Orion's point about 'jumper plate' makes sense. And 87580 is probably becoming known as a 'double jumper plate'.

I used the standard of:
I was confused and couldn't find 87580 part for a while. If I was confused and I'm probably one of the most advanced LDraw users then I'm not going to be the only one.

Until you pointed it out I hadn't noticed they were split apart as I always go looking for the jumper plate in tiles.

Categorisation is never going to be perfect for everyone but I do agree with you that the jumper _plate_s should be plates, if only for historical and common nomenclature reasons.

Although I also think 88000 (definitely) and probably 6576 should be tiles.
