AAAH—that sort of thing is the bane of my existence! You are brave to have attempted it.
This reminds me of a feature I wish existed somewhere; I'd call it "gravity". It would let you virtually "drop" loose pieces onto a surface or into a container, and they would lie naturally. (I guess this would require at least collision info, along with some way of modeling the mass and center of gravity of a part?)
