There shouldn't be anything controversial about them besides the decision to launch in just 8 countries.
When I put them in the hands of a young child, I saw that it works exactly as intended. Play time is absolutely enhanced by the sounds and lighting which are triggered by proximity to smart tags and minifigs, movement, and the color sensor.
I looked up the bulk cost for the components used to make the smart brick, and it is fair to guess that the brick costs 4-6$ to manufacture. The charger and USB cable would be another couple bucks. Retail costs are generally 2-3x the manufacturing cost, so it's not hard to understand why a smart brick and charger adds 25$ to the retail cost of Smart Play sets.
That's honestly about right when the TIE Fighter costs 70$ for 475 parts and a smart brick. It is expensive, but probably not overpriced per-se.
