I'm not sure if there's a standard one way or the other, but we typically think of A, B, C etc. as being the different models for which instructions are given, not so much the ideas on the back of the box. Though there is admittedly some gray area, like set 8448 which gives only the beginning steps for several of its alternate builds.

Ok, then for now I would propose that the lettering covers the instructions first and then continues with the lid and back of the box. So if there is a second model in the instructions, it would be "B", and then I would continue with "C" for the models on lid and the back.
I hope that is ok? We can always change it later if there is an official naming pattern.
