Why don't stud grids allow offset snapping?

Why don't stud grids allow offset snapping?
#1
Hi,

I'm wondering why we can't have snap info for placing round parts such as 1x1 round plates and 1x1 round bricks in-between at least a 2x2 array of studs?I don't think its because only certain parts fit there, because if that was always allowed, then studs would snap into axle-holes, clutches would snap to pins etc

The offset clutches on 1xN plates, tiles, and bricks are sometimes missing snap info too, same goes for tubes on 2xN bricks plates and tiles - no snap info.

and yes my shadow, official, and unofficial library is up to date.

So turning of the snap feature isn't enough to do the job? Taking for granted you're talking about LDCad?

Roland has always said that part snapping was meant to be geared towards making connections that aren't just as easily managed using grid snapping. (In other words, if you turn off part snapping and set the editing grid to its default of 10x8x10, it will have the same effect as part snapping to each stud and inter-stud position. Or if you start with a part placed between studs, a grid step of 20 will keep it always between studs.)

That's not to say I haven't also sometimes wished for this capability, but I do understand the desire to keep things cleaner and simpler in the interface.

Indeed, it started out as an assist to grid editing. Mainly because the whole snapping thing is kind of complicated  Big Grin

Also the current version only matches a single snap point without keeping track of what's occupied so the closest best match wins.

For this reason I tend to limit the snap information to the most common connections to prevent many (many many) false positives.
