Bricklink thinks these are 2 different patterns. I'm leaning that way but I'm not entirely convinced that the differences are meaningful. Thoughts?

Curious…they appear in only three sets between them, and of those three, one of them (set 21322) contains both parts and is the only set containing the white version. (Looks like a heck of a set, by the way!)

I would probably consider them the same part, unless and until more photos appear that suggest they're actually intended to be distinct. I think the only difference BL is noting is that one has tan shadows and one has grey shadows—which really could just be a factor of the underlying part color.

New Elementary mentioned these parts and their "slightly different prints" in their review of 21322 set (Pirates Barracuda Bay)

At least we could say the color of the shadow is different...

I don't think the color of the shadow is different. The wax seal is slightly different though, hence this thread.

On the photo at the beginning of that thread it's true I don't see much difference but on the following photo, I see Light Bluish Grey shadow on the White, and I would say Medium Dark Flesh shadow for the Tan tile.

To me, it seems clear that these are two different patterns. They are very similar, but the following difference appear to be real:
  1. No shadow for wax seal on white part.
  2. Different wax seals.
  3. Different shape to the lines. (Tan part has three smooth lines and one line with a kink; white part has two smooth lines and two lines with kinks.)
  4. Overall pattern size on white part is narrower.
In addition to the above difference that (to me at least) prove that the patterns really are different, the shadows may or may not be different colors. (It's obviously hard to tell the real color vs. the perceived color after bleed-through on the tan part.)

It seems to me that if the perceived colors are different, then the patterns (as we model them) have to be different. Otherwise, we'd need some way to account for the transparency of ink colors—that doesn't exist, does it?

I would see them as two individual patterns as well, interesting enough that TLG made two such similar prints around the same time. It does not look like a mis-print
