  Issue with hemisphere part with textures
Posted by: Toby Nelson - 2024-01-15, 10:14 - Forum: Parts Authoring - Replies (20)

This affects the textured parts 61287p01.dat,  61287p02.dat,  61287p03.dat,  61287p04.dat: "Cylinder Hemisphere  2 x  2 with Cutout" with textures

The textures for these parts show Mercator-like maps. The Mercator projection is an example of a CYLINDRICAL projection (See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercator_projection, which references https://archive.org/details/Snyder1987Ma...1/mode/2up).

But the part has defined a SPHERICAL texture map. This makes the lines of latitude curved instead of straight.

The fix is a one line change in each file, like so:

0 !TEXMAP START CYLINDRICAL 0 0 0 0 -46 0 -26 0 0 180 61287p01rb.png

replacing with the appropriate png file in each case.

  Rename some axlehol primitives
Posted by: Magnus Forsberg - 2024-01-13, 21:50 - Forum: Parts Tracker Discussion - Replies (4)

I want to separate the axle primitives from the axle hole primitives, but some names are now confusing.

After the redesign of the axlehole primitive families there are now three primitives that are named axleholX but should only be used in axles. These are only used in different axle designs, but are named as if they are a primitive for an axle hole.

axlehol8.dat  "Technic Axle Hole Perimeter"
[Image: 200px-Axlehol8.png]
axlehol9.dat  "Technic Axle Hole Tooth Inner Edges"
[Image: 200px-Axlehol9.png]
axleho10.dat   "Technic Axle Hole Tooth Surface"
[Image: 200px-Axleho10.png]

Is there a way to rename them, and perhaps prohibit them from being used in a design as a hole primitive?
Or would it be enough to only sort them on the prim ref page?

And as a side note, do we need a new primitive for an axle hole with open ends? I don't think we do.
 axl2hol8.dat
[Image: 200px-Axl2hol8.png]
axl3hol8.dat
 [Image: 200px-Axl3hol8.png]

Note how the surfaces in the 3 axlXhol8 prims are oriented.
axlehol8 have the surface facing outwards, while the other 2 have it facing inwards, as a hole.

  Braille Bricks descriptions
Posted by: Magnus Forsberg - 2024-01-12, 17:53 - Forum: Parts Tracker Discussion - Replies (4)

I've been trying to wrap my head around the LEGO braille bricks, and how we should describe them.
https://library.ldraw.org/tracker/33567

The inventory so far looks like this, but non of the sites have complete info yet.

It's pretty clear that we need to have some sort of standard here.

  • Where should the word "Braille" be placed?
  • How do we describe the physical stud pattern?
  • Should they all have their different language in the description? Many are common, and other are unique.
  • Should we include the Braille Unicode character?
  • How do we describe all the language specific letters, and symbols?
  • Keywords?

My suggestion is this:
"Brick 2 x 4 Braille [stud position] with [language] "[printed pattern]" Pattern"

Steffen suggested this, on 60198p01:
"Brick 2 x 4 with 1 Stud Braille Dots-1 ⠁ A 1"

Rene used this on 60198p01:
"Brick Braille 2 x 4 with 1 Stud (DOTS-1) with A1 Pattern"

  Ring primitive update
Posted by: Orion Pobursky - 2024-01-11, 16:27 - Forum: Parts Tracker Discussion - Replies (8)

In order to align all ring primitives to the"ring" vice "rin" or "ri" naming and prevent 100s of parts having to pass through the PT, I intend to do the following:
- Create new "ring" primitives and submit them to the PT (these will be fastracked if already CC BY 4)
- Obsolete the old "rin" and "ri" primitives and submit those to the PT (these will also be fastracked if already CC BY 4)
- Certify those 2 groups of primitives via the normal process
- Once certified, update all the affected parts to the non-obsolete primitive via manual database action. The official parts will be flagged as receiving a minor edit and will automatically be included in the next part update.

Since this circumvents the normal PT process for some parts, I'd like to ensure there are no major objections to this plan.

  Axle Length vs Axle Stopper
Posted by: Gerald Lasser - 2024-01-10, 21:34 - Forum: Parts Authoring - Replies (22)

I am starting the thread based on the discussion that evolved here on the PT concerning part 72008, which has no through holes, but an axle stopper at the centre.

There are some other parts that have a stopper, but no matter how small it is, this is currently incompüatible with our axel lengths, which are multiples of 20 LDUs.

Here is Magnus' statment:
Magnus Forsberg [MagFors] made the following comment. 2024-01-10 16:53:49
This is perhaps a good opportunity to discuss the error in all similar parts.
The hole needs to be exactly 20 ldu deep, but in most cases it has been modeled with a divider at 19.5, 1 ldu thick.
That's not correct.

All Technic Axle are made using the axle.dat primitive. Or something more suitable, when needed.
That primitive is not correct. A real axle has a slightly bevelled, convex end. Making it possible to have the 2 axles pushed all the way into the stopper ring, wich has a coresponding concave bevelled design

The axlehole primitives in this part need to be 20 ldu deep, to allow a correct position of a mounted axle.
But we need to also have a stopper, 1 ldu thick. It doesn't add up.

When I reworked the axlehole primitive I found that many parts use a primitive that is only 19.5 ldu.
This will be a problem in connection seeking SW, that will not allow a correct position of the axle. The hole isn't deep enough.

And Max' measurement of the Axles in real life:
Max Martin Richter [MMR1988] made the following comment. 2024-01-10 18:24:00
All axles I measure are shorter than our models.
2L = 15.7 mm
3L = 23.4 mm
4L = 31.7 mm
5L = 39.4 mm
6L = 47.7 mm
7L = 55.5 mm
8L = 63.5 mm
10L = 79.4 mm
12L = 95.2 mm
