More common parts missing from LDraw

I'm trying to expand my LEGO Parts Guide to include more vintage parts, and hope to add a publicly visible mode to browse the most common retired parts sometime soon!  I do not want to do that until I've added as many common vintage parts as possible, and some of them are missing from LDraw.

This thread includes those parts in top 500 most common parts for any 5-year period that are not in LDraw collection yet.  I hope this helps inspire folks to fill in some gaps in the LDraw parts library!

I just updated the original post to include a section of missing parts from sets in 2024 alone.  This elevates some very useful parts which should be shortlisted for inclusion quickly because iif their universal appeal.

Rene, I can create that list pretty easily.  (I had planned to do it by decade, since the parts common to each decade aren't necessarily those which are most common in previous decades.)

I will update the original post with most common missing parts from that date range soon!

I've dabbled a bit in creating some of the very old parts. Trouble is, many of them are non-System*, HO-scale parts like gas pumps, policemen and of course vehicles. The LDraw didacts out there would say these need not be modeled as they do not connect to or interact with regular, brick-like parts. But on the other hand, many of the earliest building sets cannot be considered complete without these parts. (Consider the great 1310 Esso station, for example.)

*(Of course, I say "non-System", but in reality these parts are very much in-System—no less than the original "system", the System in Play!)

Don't worry, it's still a long-term goal of mine.  But it might have to wait for retirement…

One complication is that LDraw parts author community and the old parts collectors don't necessarily overlap, so good orthographic images of these parts can be hard to come by.

While it would be awesome to have all the HO scale vehicles inside the LDraw collection, I do tend to agree that parts with system connections (studs, pins etc...) are the most interesting ones to add since LDraw is primarily used to model things that people can build with LEGO.  

My queries seem to filter out most vehicles or other non-studded parts, so it is hard to know which ones are most common and should be tackled first,.

Even with my queries, if we look at the 'most common' parts for an era like 1950-1960, some LEGO "elements" that are definitely not bricks appear pretty high on the list, like:

I think the HO wheels are all the same, but I'd have to look more specifically through Gary's guide and other sources. Incidentally, my plan for the HO vehicles was to maybe buy a few in the worst possible condition, so as to a) save money, and b) not feel bad about disassembling them somewhat! I do think they often share a common chassis as well, but I'm pretty sure there's more than one version of that.

the other plate is atleast a new variant (maybe even an own part).
it connects to a different type of door (tilt door/double doors).
it also has a different amount of studs and is for different cars.
the old one is narrow, it only fits the H0 cars. (13 side studs)
the new one has a 4stud wide ramp. (14 side studs)
Peeron has two entries (820b and c) which seem to be the same part. (still only one set: 348)
the doors are missing in Ldraw too, they are the same for right/left and are an assembly with a torsion spring.
the eight-sided stud can be rotated and locks in the base / the roof.
