Some further investigation implies it may be something to do with LDView not having visibility of the path to the faded part.
I opened the "csi.ldr" file within the LPub3d/tmp folder using a text editor and could see the three parts for the last step on the first page. I then opened the "csi.ldr" file using LDView, which yielded the first screenshot shown below. Using the LDView menu option "File/Extra Dirs ...", I then added the path "D:\users\Vista\djm\AppData\Local\LPub3D Software\LPub3D\fade\parts" within LDView, reloaded the file in LDView which yielded the second image shown below. The second screenshot is what I expected LDPub3D would have generated.
Note that even though LDView now has the extra directory explicitly added, it does not appear to be using it when invoked by LPub3D.
