Unfortunately I have not found a good way to recreate the backgrounds yet, so I am open to any suggestions. 

The backgrounds in the book seem to be fairly simple - cut out cardboards (or similar) in green over a plain blue backdrop.

You could recreate the bottom plane using simply a green rect.dat below your scene:

(replace x and y with a scaling factor that fits your scene, probably something >1000)

The sky/hills could then be placed similarly as a separate "pseudo-sticker" file behind everything (and scaled like the rect.dat).

Some scenes might require projectlng the image on a cylindrical shape. You might also get some better results when changing the colours of the BG to canvas or rubber, to reduce reflections.
