Could you do some benchmarking on your PC? Just to compare our systems and maybe be able to estimate the time your editor would take to render town-ldr on my PC.
Town.ldr renders at 63.2 seconds in LDView, and 4.634 seconds in L3Lab on my PC. (That's the reason why I have been so utterly upset about using LDraw colors that L3Lab can't handle...)
What's the score for your PC on those two programs rendering town.ldr?
