And allowing png's to use ldraw colors as their pallet (including #16) would solve the one downside of this.

How would you handle smoothing the borders tho? They would really jagged in case we'd use the pallet.

Also, the benefit of using texture map that the current approach of geometry colors doesn't allow, and neither would the pallet, is the gradient pattern borders. A lot of times dual-injected parts have colors blending in, which, if using the white-black image texture for mapping the colors (from black keeping the 16, and white painting over the new color), can be properly displayed in the part
