The shader can 'paint' the pixels using the current LDraw colour table when using a png with a pallette.
The png's internal palette would only be a place holder of the rgb's at the time of its generation.
Only problem with this are the high number colours.
An alternative would be to use the RGB png values as if they where LDraw colour numbers, but it would look very weird when interpreted as normal RGB values
