1980's and 1990's Town and Trains

Are there any standards or guidelines anywhere about creating text prims? I vaguely remember reading about them once somewhere, but still their existence tends to sneak up on me.

Not really. My only criteria is their re-usability like the Stencil font which was used on a lot of stickers from the 70s and 80s and Western of coarse. I forgot, an unused text prim will be hold 'til it is used in a part - like the rest of the prims:
