Banner gradient on the main site

I took your gradient idea and ran with it for a bit. Here's the result:


Definitely could use some tweaking but I actually kind of like it. This also shows my idea for a large (maybe a bit too large in this mockup), centered banner image.

I definitely like this better than the current banner, or any of the other things I have seen suggested in this thread.
