May try something like:

- Apply like above
- place the connecting axle, make sure it's snapped to the first joint (tmp hide the second one if needed)
- Select the center axle
- rel grid
- select the 2nd uni's first end
- ctrl+home
- rotate 90 deg to align with the axle again.
- reapply the script on the 2nd joint
- snap the steering wheel to the 2nd joint's 2nd end.
