So why all the angst about recycling every part through the Parts Tracker?

I have no idea. Since it doesn't affect geometry, I don't even think that the standard of acceptance should be the same. Maybe just a pull request with automated checks and admin approval.

But if the snapping information is in a separate file in a sister folder, we don't even need to touch the existing .dat file.
