1.x does use a framework (wxWidgets) but I try to minimize dependencies on it because even with 1.0 I wanted it to be full screen OpenGL at some point. Modal dialogs are currently in the way of that.

Also part of the whole hobby (for me) is to write things I don't get to do during normal work projects. And writing a gui library is something I always wanted to do.
