Most programs also perform 10%-15% faster with a simple 64-bit recompile, at the expense of using somewhat more memory to perform any given task. So big single-program memory space definitely isn't the only reason to have 64-bit versions of programs. I haven't tested POV's performance, but I have tested LDView, and in CPU-bound operations, 64-bit LDView is measurably faster than 32-bit LDView. (In LDView, you generally have to enable conditional lines on a large model in order to see this difference, since most of its geometry drawing isn't limited by the CPU, but by the graphics card.)
