There are 3 primitives called axlecap used on some motors and gearboxes. I think they are an early atempt to create the beveled axleend. 
axlecap:  u9377, 172
axlecaph:  u9374
axlecaph2:  172, u9374, u9377

used in parts
motor 6216a-e
gearbox 170c01


IMHO, axlecap and axlecaph should be replaced.
I think axlecaph2 should stay as it is designed to allow a rubberband transmission.

Is it correct to replace the axlecap prim with a beveled axleend primitive, or are these axles correct with a more angular design?

https://library.ldraw.org/parts/50172 already has a beveled end with hole, that could be subfiled and reused for a replacement of axlecaph
axlecaph2 is better and should stay, but could need a new name to match the other ones and should maybe lose the edgelines to the flat inner axle sides, condlines would be better there.
what fits better? obsoleting, replacing, editing or moved-to?
axlecap -> axleend2
axlecaph -> new prim? (used in 2839a and u9374)
axlecaph2 -> new prim? (used in 172, u9374 and u9377)

But 2839a and u9374 have different axle thickness, 4 and 4.5 ldu.
Which one is correct?

to be consistent, I would prefer D4/R2... (anyone with the parts at hand to check? looks like the motor internals are quite similar...)
the Bühler replacement train motor (BL x551/x482) has a 2mm (D5/R2.5) axle, also seems like this motor size is inside both the old 4.5V/12V and older 9V technic motors.
could be Bühler 1.16 / Mabuchi F 280 / similar flat motor, ~30x24x18mm with 2mm axle
