Sticker orientation for abstract patterns

Sticker orientation for abstract patterns
#1
While I'm creating one of the stickers for Set 4020,
https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/cat...1&#T=C&C=0
the sticker orientation issue revisited.

The issue is here:
https://library.ldraw.org/tracker/26410
* The sticker is used as a ship's plimsoll line, in portrait orientation
* The sticker is placed in landscape orientation in the sheet, only due to space limitations
* The pattern itself consists of geometrical shapes only (not font typefaces etc.) and does not have fixed orientation

As Max mentioned in the review, we need to get consensus for the orientation issue.
Which is in priority, the actual use of sticker or the placement in the sticker sheet?

Sticker sheet orientation is irrelevant. Always look for the usage orientation.
But sometimes it doesn't matter much.
Try to think as a user, trying to apply it to a model. I don't want to fiddle around to much, before I can get it into the correct position.
If the design has a clear Up-direction, it has priority.

We've already hashed this out, multiple times. Magnus's answer is the correct one.

Please point me to the discussion, where we agreed on this 'cos I'd like to see all stickers with no clear orientation (numbers, fonts) oriented landscape.

Ok, you're right, we've never actually put out formal guidance so here it is:
- Per the spec, sticker patterns should be oriented so that top is aligned with +Z axis.
- Top is defined as either the logical top of a picture, text, etc. or, in the case of more abstract patterns, what the top is when the sticker is applied.
- When in doubt, sticker should be oriented such that X value is greater that Z

Thanks very much.
This 820672d and coming plimsoll line sticker should be oriented portrait.
@Willy: Could you lift hold for this part?

But how about this?
https://library.ldraw.org/tracker/26411
The sticker is applied portrait in the set, but the pattern is more abstract and a number of similar stickers in landscape orientation exist in the library.

For 820672d rule 2 applies as there aren't any other similar sticker patterns.
820672g rule 3 applies since that are other patterns and it is more abstract.

Frankly I'm tired of this argument. I think it is far too pedantic even for us.

You're wrong on this and you know it. Big Grin

As said I don't agree with this.

Please add (Landscape) in brackets at the end.

Either the LSB or the SteerCo has to vote on this. Has to go here:

Not sure this is spec worthy. The spec already addresses the first point. The last 2 points are judgement calls and don't belong in the spec.
