why not open LSC forum for posting for everyone?

Hi,

I just wondered why I was not able to file a request/idea in forum
http://forums.ldraw.org/list.php?5
to the LSC.

Why is that door closed?
Should not everybody be able to file a suggestion there?

The issue I wanted to file there is:
an official location for ldconfig.ldr has not yet been rolled out officially,
see this post: http://forums.ldraw.org/showthread.php?t...346#pid346

However, the recent parts library updates issued it officially,
so it is a de facto standard now that ldconfig.ldr sits in the root LDRAW folder
(which is a Good Place ™ IMHO)

My request would simply be to add this to the standards documentation.
Or does that already exist somewhere?

Travis, in case you read this, could you move this thread to the LSC forum?
Or anybody else?

The LSC and SteerCo forums are for official business of the two committees. In the past the discussion was done in a private mailing list and was equally unavailable to everyone.

This could be changed but that's an issue to bring up with the SteerCo.

What is the best way to formally bring this or other issues to the SteerCo's attention?

With the transition from Lugnet to the new forums, perhaps the time is right for continued glasnost.

Correction: In the past the discussions were done in the private mailing list AND in open announcements for everyone to reposond in democratic threads on LUGNET. Open for everyone. This is not what I call equally unavailable.

If it really is that important to keep the announcement forums clear from feedback, at least there should be some kind of follow-up-to... set to the announcements so there will be a link to the follow-up discussion that absolutely should be allowed and encouraged.

That's simply not true. You and I have both been members of the SteerCo before and much of what we said was never available except in digest form[1]. Which can happen here.

I think we may be at cross-purposes here. I think there is some, understandable, confusion about the goal of the various forums. This probably needs to be sorted out elsewhere.

I totally agree with this but (I think) the LSC and SteerCo groups aren't for announcements. I do agree that having the forums viewable and private is not right and is confusing. I'd like to see them hidden in the same way the email lists were previously hidden.

[1] For example discussions relating to the LEGO Universe parts were kept private for at least a year until we'd decided what to do, had a means to do it, and something to announce. That could not have gone on it public.

The LSC forum is, by the LSC charter, open for reading but closed to posting for everyone but the LSC. This is why we created the "Parts Standards" forum, to allow for the general discussion of standards. The SteerCo forum is closed and should only be visible to current SteerCo members and the website administration. If you can see it and don't meet the requirements, let me know since there is a settings problem. The public forum for the SteerCo in the "LDraw Organization Discussion" forum.

To sum up:
- Each private forum has a corresponding public forum
- The private LSC forum is publicly viewable because the LSC charter requires it to be

I concede that the way announcements are handled right now in the software is currently sub-optimal. I'm looking into options but right now I think best solution is to open up a topic in the relevant forum and link to it in the announcement post. This will allow discussion to flow and eliminated Easter egg hunting for the correct topic, especially if someone comes in late to the conversation.
