71613/30346c01 too high?! - Sylvain Sauvage - 2025-05-16

Hi again,

Another (old) error brought out on the Studio forums: part

71613 Electric Light & Sound Brick  4 x 12 x  2 Laser Drill  (formerly and for BL 30346c01)

is too high by 1 plate.
As the description says it’s supposed to be 2 bricks high… but the 3D model is 1 plate more.

User provided a pic (Google drive, link in the post) of the real part.

Bottom half looks ok, only top is too tall, isn'T it?

.. and it is a 22 years old part...

Think it will be hard to correct without having the real part in hand. What's wrong? Which section is correct?

Yep, old and rare part.
I’ll see if the original reporter can provide more pics….

also it seems like both the drill thing on the front i a plate high and the drill holes on the bottom are missing

since its a 2.0 part requires rewrite btw

Thanks!
For some reason I can't see or download one of the images (20250517_172424.jpg), file seems corrupted. Can you check, please?

added a line to compare
looks like there is really an error...
the original part is more "squished" at the slopes.
where is the original part data from? (digital/measured?)

RE: 71613/30346c01 too high?! - Orion Pobursky - 2025-05-17

Given the part was edited in 2013 by someone who wasn't the original author, it very likely that this is a very old submission and the "data source" was manual measurements.

RE: 71613/30346c01 too high?! - Orion Pobursky - 2025-05-17

Found in the sub parts, submitted in 2002 so the very beginning of the Parts Tracker.

RE: 71613/30346c01 too high?! - Pawel2 - 2025-05-29

Will it be possible to make a new model for the part?

i didnt say that

I have both versions of this part (yes, there are 2, with a slightly different battery opening).

There seems to more off than just the height. I will try to make a new model. Should I do both versions?

Quite a bit off from reality:

The current one is also too long, making it out of system. The real one is exactly 12 studs long (if you ignore the front stud).

The version difference is entirely limited to the battery lid. The prongs on the inside were removed, as well as the hole used to unlock it with a screwdriver (you can see some indentations from the previous owner being less careful  Dodgy ). Since the receiving side for the prongs on the base part is present in both versions, I assume the "hard access" version came first.

Buump

RE: 71613/30346c01 too high?! - Chris Böhnke - 2026-03-08

Ok, quick status update, since this is taking longer than anticipated:
  • The big complicated Bottom piece is almost finished (which was the main issue)
  • Top Cover already complete
  • Battery Cover, Button and Electronics still a bit WIP, but those are rather simple models
  • I don't see much point in uploadingan incomplete "set" to the PT, so everything will get there once finished

I really hope it's done this week, but I can't make any promises.

RE: 71613/30346c01 too high?! - Rene Rechthaler - 2026-03-08

should there be an intermediate assembly without the lids, but with the batteries (u9284.dat)? or a !Help with the positions?

RE: 71613/30346c01 too high?! - Chris Böhnke - 2026-03-09

I kinda get the desire, but there's been only one shortcut for that type of thing at the moment, so it feels a bit unusual...

It also raises questions about how this would be used correctly in a model, implying that an official one would be incomplete without batteries? Does that raise the desire for both an open (instructions image) and closed version (full model) with batteries?
EDIT:
Which number would that be? 30346c0x or 71613bc01? Note that 71613 does include the cover.

At the moment I only plan to do 71613b (Reworked Full Assembly, no Batteries, Slotted Cover) and 71613c (Reworked Full Assembly, no Batteries, Not-Slotted Cover).
Adding the !HELP Line seems like a nice bonus though.

Side Note:
Am I the only one feeling that standardized "non Lego" objects (batteries, screws etc.) shouldn't use u-Numbers but something else?

Check out the insectoids 71603
https://library.ldraw.org/parts/12161

Batteries are mentioned in the !HELP line of the full assembly

So I would recommend the same structure
- all parts that form the assembly (upper lower part, screws, LEDs...) may be a u-number
- The battery cover
- Complete part with batteries in the !HELP

RE: 71613/30346c01 too high?! - Chris Böhnke - 2026-03-16

Ok, finally on the PT (sort of):
https://library.ldraw.org/parts/51692

Should be usable for most purposes as it currently is without much issues; just missing a few non-plastic internals.

I will add the electronics and screws as soon as I find the time.
