Correcting 3815, 3816, 3817 (Minifig Hips & Legs) - Nils Schmidt - 2015-11-22

Hey,

I just "finished" the first step of the "leg rework process" Smile
The corrected hips+legs are attached to this post. The legs do not use subfiles at the moment.

edit: I updated all files on 2015-11-30.
edit2: The files are now on the parts tracker! (3815, 3816, 3817)

Here are the test scenarios from Magnus Forsbergs post

Code:
1 16 -10 -15 0 6 0 0 0 60 0 0 0 6 4-4cyli.dat
1 16 10 -15 0 6 0 0 0 60 0 0 0 6 4-4cyli.dat
1 16 0 20 0 20 0 0 0 20 0 0 0 10 box0.dat
1 34 20 12 0 0 -40 0 9.5 0 0 0 0 -9.5 4-4cyli.dat
1 13 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 3815b.dat
1 13 0 12 0 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 3816b.dat
1 4 0 12 0 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 3817b.dat

Code:
1 6 60 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 3815b.dat
1 7 60 12 0 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 3816b.dat
1 7 60 12 0 -1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 -1 3816b.dat

0 // The same set-up in real parts makes it clear that the current 3816s01.dat is really wrong.
0 // It is possible to place this mock up on a 3023 in real parts, but not in ldraw-parts

1 44 60 40 0 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 1 3023.dat

Next steps:

- Create the subfiles
- Project existing patterns to the new legs (and fix possible pattern errors)

I estimate that it will take 3 to 4 months to transfer all patterns to the new leg.

Re: Correcting 3815, 3816, 3817 (Minifig Hips & Legs) - Magnus Forsberg - 2015-11-23

Looking good,
But IMO the circular section of the leg has to be of the exact same size as the crutch in the hip, r=9 ldu (trans green cyli).
And I find it hard to accept the sloping backside, but as far as I can see there is no way to avoid that, without also increasing the diameter of that section. But then we have to change the hip too.

Leg Measurements - Nils Schmidt - 2015-11-24

Magnus Forsberg Wrote:But IMO the circular section of the leg has to be of the exact same size as the crutch in the hip, r=9 ldu (trans green cyli)

I measured the length of the foot with a vernier caliper. It is 8mm long (20 LDU). The circular section of the leg has a diameter of 7mm (17.5 LDU).
The circular section is centered with a resulting radius of 8.75 LDU... There is a slope on every minifig leg back. Don't worry it is just 0.045mm width per 1mm height.

Rise = 11mm
Run = 0.5mm

Slope = Rise / Run
Slope = 2200%

The slope is hard to spot with the human eye on a real pair of minifig legs.
The computer works like a magnifying glass. With very high zoom and bad aliasing you will see the slope blindingly easy.

edit: On the real part there is a small line parallel to the slope on each side. This small line makes the illusion perfect, as you can see here https://ministryofminifigures.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/spiderman3.jpg

I just took my vernier caliper and can confirm your measures.

Re: Leg Measurements - Magnus Forsberg - 2015-11-24

I also have the same measurements, but , as I said, the circular section has to be 9 ldu, and it has to be placed in the middle of its rotation center. Please study the model I made, and look at the frontsection of the circular leg surface. The gap between the hip and the leg is too big.
Correct dimensions are irrelevant now. We have to make the new design look good, together with the hip. Keep the size of the upper leg section in the old design, but move the foot to a correct position.

The slope is real and true and a consequense of the redesign. The old design made the misstake and ignored the slope.

Thanks for your feedback. I will continue my work in the next weekend!

Minifig Hips - Nils Schmidt - 2015-11-30

I attached the new hips to the original post.

Subfile Strategy for 3817 (Leg Left) - Nils Schmidt - 2015-12-07

I think we need a whole new subfile structure for 3817, too.
A few legs are now moulded with two colours.

E.g.

The wolf-man from the minifig series 14.

Re: Subfile Strategy for 3817 (Leg Left) - Magnus Forsberg - 2015-12-07

Is'nt that a different mould with different partnumbers?

I can read this on my parts
left foot = 20926
left leg = ??

right foot = 20932
right leg = ??

It looks like this work stalled, so I have reworked all the existing official 3815p... parts as 3815bp..., obsoleted the originals and submitted to the Parts Tracker. Six files with decoration on the 5-16cyli section (pa9, pc6a, pm0, pq0, pq1 and pq2) still need adjustment.

RE: Leg Measurements - Magnus Forsberg - 2020-05-31

Thank you for the kick in the butt. I started this, and I want to help finish it.

How do you plan on continuing?

Would you be able to update the 6 hips parts with decoration on the curved section (3815bpa9, pc6a, pm0, pq0, pq1 and pq2), using the 3815b... files already on the Parts Tracker?

I have started work on the decorated legs, starting with 3816/3817p4f. Some are going to be harder than others. I wonder if there is a programmatic solution.

Ok, I'll start working on those parts.

"Might this be the opportunity to change the file naming from 3815[b]pXXc01 to 73200pXX?"

Since you asked for it I'd say yes. It would make a clear cut to the obsoleted 3815cw1.dat.

The six hips are now done, and I think I should start on the legs that have matching patterns, across the hips I've reworked.

The rework is now complete - Magnus Forsberg - 2020-07-30

Dear Reviewers,

30 hips, 41 right legs, 39 left legs and 39 assembly shortcuts with pattern, have now been reworked.
All of these files had to be obsoleted due to bad geometry. The foot was in the wrong position.

We have today:
32 hips, 49 right legs, 47 left legs and 52 assembly shortcuts in the library, both official and unofficial.

But, most of these files are still unofficial an in need of a review.

Old obsolete files:
3815 ,
3816 ,
3817 ,
3815c

New reworked files:
3815b ,
3816b ,
3816b ,
73200

Please give them a review, so that they can be certified, and replace the official parts with bad geometry.
