Press Escape twice. That will unfocus the text field and close the panel. (This is standard Mac behavior and works in any application. When a panel window (with the thin title bar) is visible and accepting key events, you can press escape to close it.
By the way, the technique is listed in Help > Secret Keyboard Shorcuts.
That said, my goal is to replace the color panel with something a little more fluid and less obtrusive.
