why are images in .DAT ?
Simple question, simple answer please.

If you mean as attachments, they're not. LDraw .dat files are allowed since we're an LDraw forum. Allowing people to attach pictures is pretty rare for a forum given the huge amount of dedicated picture sharing space out there.

As Tim pointed out, there are a number of places that allow you to sign up for a free account and upload pictures. Among the LEGO community, Brickshelf, Flickr, and Photobucket are popular, but there are plenty of others (even Google has one if you have an account with them). As stated, these sites all have free signups and give you quite a bit of space to upload pictures to.

Once you've uploaded pictures onto such a site, they'll provide you with a url for your image, and you can then post that on many forums (At least forums that allow bbcode, including this one) by putting the url between IMG tags, and your image will appear in your post. Or, you can always just link to your picture(s) like you'd link to any other page.
