[LDPE] 1.8.96 Released (new random colour mode / subfile types / PrimGen2 bugfix) - Nils Schmidt - 2025-09-28

Hey,

this release provides a new random colour mode to show subfiles in one random colour.
Just click the random colour mode button again to toggle between the two variants.

You can also specify the type of the subfile now when you are going to create one from the selection in the 3D editor.

With this release you will be able to...
  • ...use a new random colour mode at subfile level, just click the random colour mode button again (it is also the new default for the PartReview tool).
  • ...see a hint if the header description misses a tilde "~" on subparts.
  • ...use a quick-fix option to adjust the name from the header based on the part type.
  • ...(not able to choose) Physical_Colour anymore. It was removed as a part type qualifier (deprecated since 2019).

The following critical issues are fixed:

  1. The hint for the part type mismatch was not correct for normal primitives.
  2. The quick-fix option for the part type mismatch did not detect "...s01.dat" names as a subfile.
  3. "Create a subpart" did not default to the subpart type or offered a choice when no type can be determined from the target path.
  4. PrimGen2's "Save As..." button modified the file header.
  5. [Linux] Automatic calculation of the viewport scale factor did not work and needs to be disabled.

The program was tested intensively with "real world" files.
However, something can go wrong in about 140.000 lines of code.

Installation on Windows:

  1. Download and extract LDPartEditor_win32_x64.zip
  2. Run LDPartEditor-1.8.96.msi
  3. Start LDPartEditor from the start menu
Installation on Linux:

  1. Download and extract LDPartEditor_linux_x64.zip
  2. Install ldparteditor_1.8.96-1_amd64.deb
  3. Start LDPartEditor from the menu or via launcher
Installation on Mac OS X:

  1. Download and extract LDPartEditor_mac_x64.zip
  2. Mount LDPartEditor-1.8.96.dmg
  3. Drag LDPartEditor.app to the Applications folder
  4. Copy ldparteditor.sh to your home folder
        4a. Open a Terminal.app and run ./ldparteditor.sh
        4b. Or open a Terminal.app and run /Applications/LDPartEditor.app/Contents/MacOS/LDPartEditor

LDPE is a 3D CAD application: The overall system requirements are higher. While I recommend to use a powerful 64-bit multicore system, it could be possible, to run LDPE on older machines as well.

  • Operating System (64-bit): Windows [7 or newer], Linux [e.g. Ubuntu Linux >=14.4], Mac OS X [>=10.6]
  • CPU: Multicore-Processor e.g. Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon II (>2.0Ghz)
  • RAM: 4GB
  • Video-Memory: 1 GB
  • Free Disk Space: 150 MB
Recommended Requirements:
  • Operating System (64bit): Windows 7,8,10,11, Linux [e.g. Ubuntu Linux >=14.4], Mac OS X [>=10.6]
  • OpenGL 3.3 compatible Graphics Card
  • CPU: Multicore-Processor with 4 cores (or more)
  • RAM: >4 GB
  • Video-Memory: >1 GB
  • Free Disk Space: 500 MB
  • For a faster start, LDPartEditor and the LDraw™ library should be installed on an SSD.

Well, talking about numbers: LDPE 0.8.0 was released 2015. This year 2025 marks its 10th anniversary :)

I started the development at July 26, 2012, over thirteen years ago.
LDPatternCreator (LPC) is from 2010 and fifteen years in the making (although its quite "feature complete").
