Glued assembly parts as closed solids - Orion Pobursky - 2023-10-27

In relation to assembly parts (see Ostrich), should all the component parts be closed solids? While I'm sure there are examples of both in the library, Chris's standard seems to have been closed solid:
https://library.ldraw.org/tracker/24369

I agree but I'd like to have a short discussion in case anyone has strong feelings against.

No strong feeling but I think that removing a constraint in parts authoring would be a good thing... Anyway, most parts are not closed solid strictly speaking, and so many internal parts closures are purely artificial and bear little or no similarity with reality!

I'm not sure I understand, can you elaborate?

I should think it would have to be closed, in case the assembly is rendered in a transparent color.

(The other possibility is that it forms a closed solid when assembled—i.e., there are no interior unmatched faces—but then why would it need to be an assembly to begin with?)

See for example cow parts: https://library.ldraw.org/official/11690 or https://library.ldraw.org/official/11710. They are close solid, but internal flat surface is obviously wrong, because they would be unmoldable as such... So making this surface has no significance/benefit. I'd let the choice close/not close to the author, without enforced rules.

Why should we force a creation of a "fake" surface inside a glued part no user will ever see,
when we are removing the duplicating surfaces inside dual moulded parts?

Well said!

The reasoning stated is sound. I will not be enforcing this policy and leave it to the author to decide.
