I imagine you could add a quad with a texmap to the model containing the blueprint, as long as you use LDCad.

Thanks Travis, forgot about this possibility. Now I don't know how to make this palatable for a LDraw average user...

I was thinking about introducing a meta for this in LDCad, one that can be bound to a ortho plane and thus shown in that particular 2D view.  I'm just not sure about some of the details yet though, like how to do handle interaction with this 'wallpaper' and what if a relative grid is active etc.

Maybe I'll try something in the first beta as I consider this a minor feature.
