Architecture Theme - Orion Pobursky - 2011-07-25

Since I didn't actually test the upload capability, here it goes. Note that this may or may not adhere to the OMR spec. I didn't check.

Edit 1 - Now OMR Spec compliant

Re: 21005 - Fallingwater - Michael Heidemann - 2011-07-25

Thank for sharing this.
Sadly all trees are placed 8 LDU too high.

Re: 21005 - Fallingwater - Orion Pobursky - 2011-07-25

Really? I rendered this at least 10 times testing out different settings and never noticed.

On a side note, I read through the OMR spec and I think it needs significant improvement...

Re: 21005 - Fallingwater - Travis Cobbs - 2011-07-25

They all look fine to me. I don't see any gaps. Did Orion update the file after your post?

Re: 21005 - Fallingwater - Orion Pobursky - 2011-07-25

Nope. I was at the airport so I took Mike's word for it.

Re: 21005 - Fallingwater - Scott Classen - 2011-07-26

Looks fine to me viewing with Bricksmith.B)

Re: 21005 - Fallingwater - Santeri Piippo - 2011-07-27

Looks fine to me as well.

2011 Architecture Series

Re: 21008 - Burj Kalifa - Orion Pobursky - 2011-11-07

Edited to make OMR Spec compliant

Re: 21008 - Burj Kalifa - Philippe Hurbain - 2011-11-07

Nitpicking: tower should use light bluish gray (71), not old gray (7)...

Re: 21008 - Burj Kalifa - Orion Pobursky - 2011-11-08

Fixed. Color 7 -> 71. Blame SPAM CONTENT memory. Gotta remember Light Grey is obsolete.

Re: 21005 - Fallingwater - Orion Pobursky - 2011-11-08

Updated for OMR Spec compliance.

Re: 21008 - Burj Kalifa - Jude Parrill - 2011-11-14

Yeah, one of the first things I do when starting a new model is I check to see which greys were used via bricklink and/or Peeron. Then I check to make sure the greys in color-bar (in MLCad) are set correctly, so that I can use them (these are edit-able, if you didn't know).

Another color that's easy to confuse is old-brown vs the new reddish-brown. I think this change happened around the same time as the grey -> bley conversion.

For the record, moving models to this topic made a mess with "Recent Messages"...

This is 21010 Robie House.

I put some STEP to mark a sequence of building, but it was not complete.

Anyway you can enjoy this building with LDview.

Special thanks to Mr. Philippe Hurbain for 99301.dat part.

Enjoy Smile

Re: 21010 - Robie House - Philippe Hurbain - 2012-02-03

Re: 21010 - Robie House - Orion Pobursky - 2012-02-03

That's cool. Any chance of getting the rest of the Theme?

Re: 21010 - Robie House - Philippe Hurbain - 2012-02-03

Now that I found a reasonably matching font, should not be too hard! Or if someone else want to try... Wink Here is the font.

Re: 21010 - Robie House - Orion Pobursky - 2012-02-03

Ahh, a project to work on. I think I need to work on the website to do list more

Re: 21010 - Robie House - Philippe Hurbain - 2012-02-03

OK, I couldn't resist... Here are two more:

font identification - Steffen - 2012-02-04

To identify a font just by its visual appearance ("does the 'g' look so-and-so... and so on"),
several databases on the web exist. They can help, even if you only have a small sample of letters.
I found playing with those quite funny. Maybe you already know of those.
For example: http://www.identifont.com

Re: font identification - Philippe Hurbain - 2012-02-04

Yes, I did try identifont in the past - but was not SO convinced by the result. And often the best match font costs an arm... So I prefer to use font preview of some tools (here I used Corel Draw) to identify the best font already present on my system.

No, I did not and did not find a way to do so. Could you explain?

Re: 21008 - Burj Kalifa - Philippe Hurbain - 2012-03-14

If you right-click on one of the color squares in the color toolbar, the color selector opens, and you can choose the color assigned to this square.

Re: 21008 - Burj Kalifa - Tim Gould - 2012-03-14

It's one of the most useful 'secret' features of MLCAD I think. Was so excited when I had it pointed out to me Smile

Re: 21008 - Burj Kalifa - Philippe Hurbain - 2012-03-14

Same thing here!

Re: 21008 - Burj Kalifa - Willy Tschager - 2012-03-14

You're NOT reading my tutorials by heart?

http://www.holly-wood.it/mlcad/basic2-en.html

Step 23:

Use the color dialog also to permanently change the default colors in the Color bar. You might substitute color 7 - Light_Gray with the nowadays used color 71 - Light_Bluish_Gray or replace rare colors like Salmon or Bright_green with transparent or chrome colors.
Right-clicking the color button you want to change will bring up the color dialog. Select a color as you would do for a part, okay-ing, MLCad will store the information in its settings.

Re: 21008 - Burj Kalifa - Jetro de Château - 2012-03-15

Guilty as charged! that's what you get from biased reading. It rings a bell now, but I had completely forgotten.
Any other nuggets most people gloss over or don't even think might be possible?

21002 - Empire State Building - Orion Pobursky - 2012-05-28

Should be OMR compliant.

Re: 21002 - Empire State Building - Willy Tschager - 2012-05-29

  • .ldr file format instead of .mpd
  • makes use of alias parts.

Re: 21002 - Empire State Building - Orion Pobursky - 2012-05-30

Ok. The alias parts thing is frustrating for a number of reasons:
- Not illegal per the spec
- Does not affect the model in any way
- No way for me to not include them in my library since I work on the Mac OSX platform so the complete.exe install file for the library is not something I can use (not that I would anyway).

The .ldr extension was used since I had no submodels. Easily changed.

Please comment here if the suggestion to use a "=" prefix for aliases would help.

Re: Architecture Theme - Reuben Pearse - 2012-06-13

I've just booked onto an event being run by RIBA (The Royal Institute of British Architects). Here's a snippet about the event:

"Senior Design Manager at LEGO Simon Kent offers a unique insight to the world of LEGO and how his own training as a product designer led to having one of the best jobs in the world on the LEGO Creator design team. Simon takes you through the design processes at LEGO and uses case studies including the LEGO Creator house design, direct modular building, and world building design models. Simon will talk about how design details are added to houses and introduce the growing LEGO Architecture series."

More details here

I'll be at the Birmingham event in the UK on the 21st June. Let me know if you're coming!

Bye for now

Reuben

I used this file for name tile.

You can see this file by SR3D, MLCAD, LDview or other LDraw compatible software.

Re: 21010 - Robie House - Christoph Mierowski - 2013-12-10

I just built this model, too. And I toyed a little bit with the light.dat .

The result is attached. Just use LDView to view it and mark use light.dat and replace standard light in preferences. Also a darker background is useful, so it looks nice.

Re: MLCad Color Buttons Modification - Steffen - 2013-12-10

here as well!

Re: MLCad Color Buttons Modification - Stephen - 2013-12-10

Arrggghhh!!!

Wish I had known this when I built my LEGO Hotel.

All those "tan" and "dark tan" bits were selected the "long way"!

Thanks Philippe for pointing this out, and Steffen for digging up an old post - I'd probably never have discovered this otherwise.
