Yafaray? - Michael Horvath - 2013-12-30

Has anyone used Yafaray to render models? Supposedly it is faster than POV-Ray at rendering complex images with a lot of features.

Does Yafray have a scene description language like POV-Ray? Can it be run standalone without Blender? Or is Blender also required?

I didn't try it yet, so cannot answer the question if it can run standalone.
But its images look promising, so if you want to run it from inside Blender,
then maybe this recent LDRAW Blender importer is useful for you:

I suggest using the latest greatest unstable master version, not the previous release 1.1,
because some important bugfixes just occured

and some are in the pipe

Some of your questions will be answered on the homepage.

As far as I have read, there is no script language like in povray.

Code:
YafaRay usually works as add-on or plug-in to a 3D software to provide raytracing capabilities on demand though it can work as a stand-alone program as well.

Do you know enough to write a short tutorial? Basically, 1. import into Blender; 2. set camera and lights presumably; 3. render in Yafray.

Having to learn three applications at once is a bit daunting.

According to this page Yafaray can read specially constructed XML files containing scene description information.

This way we could in theory side-step Blender and export directly from MLCAD, LDView, etc. etc.

I just checked the website again, and it seems they now have an XML scene description language for the standalone version of the program. So we could feasibly do direct conversions, bypassing Blender completely.

I still haven't actually tried the software yet, though.
