I think the flat spots help keep it in the lowered and raised positions, respectively. I don't have the part though.

Yes. Those corners should line up.

I had to move all three lines affected by those corners. Two vertical (left/right) lines and the lower horizontal line.

Yes, that was my first thought too.
It looks more like they have made an attempt to reduce the friction, if it were to come close enough.
But I can't find any part coming close enough, to work like that. Not even this contraption comes close. Used in at least 9 different models, together with this windscreen.
